Due to forecasted lightening based weather conditions, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our National Trails day sunset hike for all. We know how much you were looking forward to celebrating with us, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We want to ensure the best possible experience for all of our guests, and safety always comes first.

We will be rescheduling the event to June 17th as the Sunset Hike for all and Family game night. More details to come!

🌿 It's time for another edition of Wildlife Wednesday at Willow Waterhole!

This week we're spotlighting Irena Becir's photo of a Sweet Acacia (Vachellia farnesiana), a Texas native you might catch covered in clusters of golden, puffball-like flowers. 🌼

Did you know? The Sweet Acacia's blooms are so wonderfully fragrant they've been cultivated in southern France for use in perfume! Closer to home, those same sweet-smelling flowers make this tree a magnet for native bees and butterflies, while its branches offer shelter and seeds for birds and other wildlife.

Drought-tough and pollinator-friendly, the Sweet Acacia is a small but mighty part of the habitat we work to protect here at Willow Waterhole. 🐝

πŸ“Έ Spotted one on your visit? We'd love to feature your photos! Drop them in the comments or send us a message, and include your name so we can credit you.

Thanks to Irena for this week's photo, and thanks to all of you for celebrating the wild side of our greenspace with us! πŸ’šπŸŒΎ

Last week, a few of our board members and staff took on the Big Sit category of The Great Texas Birding Classic and identified 58 different bird species in just 14 hours! 🐦

It was an incredible experience that reminded us just how rich and diverse the birdlife is in our area, from year-round residents to seasonal visitors passing through.
Pictured here is our very own Trudy Holmes, volunteer coordinator and board member, along with some of the stunning species we spotted: a Red-shouldered Hawk, an adult Mississippi Kite, and what we believe is a juvenile Mississippi Kite.

Moments like these are exactly why we are so passionate about conservation in our community and a great reminder of why we do what we do. The biodiversity in our own backyard is worth protecting, and safe to say we are already looking forward to next year!

It's time for another edition of Wildlife Wednesday at Willow Waterhole!
This week we're highlighting: Luz Rivera's photo of a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly

Did you know? Passionvines actually fight back against hungry caterpillars by developing nectar glands that attract ants to guard them, so Gulf Fritillaries adapted by laying their eggs on tendrils or nearby plants to sneak right past the ant patrol! 🐜

It’s time for another edition of Wildlife Wednesday at Willow Waterhole!

This week we’re highlighting: Anna & Sam's photo of a Purple Passionflower.

Did you know?
Purple Passionflower vines are a favorite host plant for Gulf Fritillary butterflies πŸ¦‹ Their caterpillars rely on the leaves as a food source before transforming into butterflies! Purple Passionflowers also make an edible fruit called a Maypop. Indigenous peoples also used it as medicine to treat boils, cuts, inflammation, and insomnia.

Join us this Saturday, May 16th, for our last volunteer workday until the fall season returns! Come spend the morning helping care for the trails and habitat at Willow Waterhole Greenspace Conservancy while making a positive impact in the community.

Whether you are a longtime volunteer or joining us for the first time, we would love to have you out there with us. It is a great chance to get outside, meet fellow nature lovers, and help keep Willow Waterhole beautiful for both wildlife and visitors.

Volunteer check-in begins at 8:30 AM and work will run from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Please wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and comfortable clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Sun protection such as hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses is also highly recommended. Be sure to bring water to stay hydrated.

Let’s finish the spring season strong together. We hope to see you there!
