Golfers Against Cancer

Golfers Against Cancer Golfers Against Cancer, with the help of our corporate and individual sponsors and our many participants in our events provide funds for cancer research.

This research will help find the cure for the many types of cancer that inflict millions of people. Golfers Against Cancer was started in the summer of 1997 by members of the Deerwood Club in Kingwood, Texas. The group was founded to show support to a Deerwood member and assistant pro who both had been diagnosed with cancer at the time. GAC was the idea of a Deerwood golf wife who told her husband

, "if you are upset, then do something about it." Bobby Jones talked to his golf buddies Everette Bernal, Rod Felts and the Saturday morning gang at Deerwood and together they started Golfers Against Cancer. The mission of Golfers Against Cancer was to raise funds for cancer research to honor these friends battling cancer. GAC’s first fundraising golf tournament was held in 1997 and it generated $80,000. All of the expenses in 1997 were paid for by two funding families that year which continues as a GAC core belief allowing new supporters to know their contributions go directily to cancer research. The growth has been rapid ever since and through 2009, GAC has raised over $20 million (including matching funds and after expenses) and funded over 100 specific research projects at leading institutions around the nation focused on cures over a wide range of cancers. Over the years, the circle of supporters has grown so large, that a second, nongolfing event was created, the Dinners for Cancer Research (DCR). Both GAC and DCR have become vehicles for golfers and non-golfers alike to support friends and family with cancer and to help speed the cure. Dinners are currently held in New York City, NY, Atlanta, GA, Greensboro, NC, and Boston, MA. Again, the founding sponsors contributions cover all costs of hosting the events. 🎗️ Meet Abby – Our 2025 Golfers Against Cancer Gala & Tournament Honoree 🎗️

With full hearts, we are honored to recognize Abby as our 2025 Golfers Against Cancer Honoree. At just 14 years old, Abby’s strength, grace, and unwavering spirit inspire everyone who meets her.

A freshman at Covenant Christian School in Conroe, Abby is not only a straight-A student but also a co-captain of the Junior Varsity Cheer Team. Her passions are as vibrant as her spirit—she plays the guitar, loves to read, and is the most loving big sister to Cody. As an Ever-Loyal Kiowa at Camp Mystic, she is known for her kindness, humor, intelligence, and infectious joy.

But above all, Abby is the light of her father David’s life. Their shared love of deer hunting led to a moment that would change everything—the discovery of her brain tumor. Despite the challenges she has faced, Abby continues to shine, embodying courage and resilience in a way that touches all of our hearts.

This year, we come together not just to celebrate Golfers Against Cancer’s mission, but to honor Abby’s journey. She is why we fight. She reminds us of the urgent need for continued cancer research and the difference we can make—together.

Join us in celebrating Abby and supporting this life-changing cause. 💛

📅 October 25th-27th, 2025

It's with heavy hearts we share the news of the passing of Gary Green's beloved wife, Diane Green. Gary, who has been an integral and cherished part of our GAC family for many years, is in our thoughts. Please join us in praying for Gary and his family, that they find peace and healing in this time of sorrow.

"Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her."

Last year Golfers Against Cancer decided to move our event to Walden and combine the 2 events since we seemed to have lost Kingwood community support. I am so happy we did. Our golf tournament was sold out and the new owners are letting us use the course free for 10 years. We opened our gala up to everyone in the community who had been affected by cancer instead of just golfers. GREAT MOVE. As gala auction chair and board member on gala committee, GAC knocked it out of the park. The gala was a first year SELL OUT with over 350 attendees. Both silent and live auctions were successful and we already have people wanting to commit for next year. Our organization was truely blessed this year and our team is committed to raise the bar next year. Hope to see you there

❤️This year at our Gala, we are honoring a special little girl, Carson, who has been courageously battling stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer.

Her strength and resilience have inspired us all, and in her name, we are proud to introduce the 🎗️ Carson Kimberly Hiemenz Grant🎗️

This grant will provide seed funds for cancer research , helping to drive innovation and discovery in the fight against this devastating disease. Carson’s fight is a reminder of the importance of community and compassion, and we are committed to supporting efforts that bring us closer to a cure. 🔬
