This Thirsty Thursday we talk savings the preventative way...

Pay bills online.

There are few things I hate more than late fees on bills. Setting up autopay on your electricity and water bills will help avoid those unnecessary fees, and they'll also remove the need for postage on paper bills.

“Solar generation is just one part of the college’s commitment to improving our energy efficiency. We have always been a trusted steward of the community’s resources. These solar arrays are simply a visible reminder of that on-going commitment,” said San Jacinto College Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer.

The larger 391-kW system is planned for the Central Campus’ new Anderson-Ball Classroom Building, which is scheduled to open in January 2022.  The Anderson-Ball building is expected to be the largest instructional building in the United States constructed of mass timber, a building process that relies on prefabricated solid wood panels that provide a low-carbon emission alternative to steel and concrete. The 122,000-sq-ft building also made use of existing foundations from predecessor structures.

The second 263-kW system is slated for the Jones Building at South Campus. That project began construction late in 2020 and is scheduled to open in fall 2021. Originally built in 1983, the 53,000 sq-ft Jones Building is currently undergoing a $13 million renovation designed to provide updated classrooms for peak period use.

“Sunfinity has helped a wide range of businesses reap the benefits of solar energy,” said John Billingsley, Chairman and CEO for Sunfinity. “That includes non-profit and for-profit organizations, but bottom-line — it’s about the bottom-line. A ‘commercial’ solar system can return hundreds of thousands of dollars – even millions – that can go toward other priorities. We think San Jacinto College has made a wise decision in going solar, and we appreciate their confidence in us.”

I'm very proud of one of my greatest failures.

I had just started working in solar and I was talking to Mr. Gilbert about it. He understood immediately how solar worked.

He told me to quote him. I was nervous about it because I was new and not fully trained or familiar with how solar worked.

After we got Mr. Gilbert installed, I left the company I was with because of personal reasons. Unfortunately, my old company was either unwilling to help or at times were M.I.A...

This really hurt because I gave Mr. Gilbert my word that solar power would work for him.

So, for about 7 months, between Mr. Gilbert and myself, we called to make things right. What did we make right you ask?

Mr. Gilbert was paying 2 bills!!! One from Reliant and the solar loan. I was hurt because, here I am, a new rep who got his almost 70 year old neighbor involved with something I didn't fully understand, but I was determined to figure it out.

Well, after much back and forth, we learned that Reliant was somehow unaware that Mr. Gilbert had solar installed on his home.

We got him switched over to the correct plan and now he's much happier.

The point of all this is that I refused to give up on what I believed solar can do and was finally validated in my belief but not without some struggle.

I learned that not all electricity plans are the same but also that the electricity company will not automatically move you to their solar plan unless you call and switch yourself.

Posted, with Mr. Gilbert's permission, is his bill from February 2021 and March 2021. He went from paying $86.64 in February to $4.27 in March.

I have learned a lot and would love to use my knowledge of solar to save you money too. Click the link in my bio for a quote.

This Thirsty Thursday we talk summer savings the simple way…

With summer upon us, a great way to save on energy in and or around your home is to cook outside. It's almost grilling season.

Texas summers and backyard cookouts go hand-in-hand. It’s the perfect energy-saving method of cooking — you aren’t heating up your house, and you’re not using energy.

Please note that charcoal and propane do release carbon emissions. So, you should keep that in mind when tracking your carbon footprint.

Griddy Energy customers are off the hook for their outrageous electric bills for February, according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The attorney general’s office sued Griddy under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act on behalf of 24,000 customers who have a cumulative $29.1 million in unpaid electric bills from the week of freezing temperatures in Texas last month.

The action Paxton took was to release Griddy’s former customers from Griddy’s bankruptcy, which it filed for Monday in Houston. Texas won’t move forward with its state court lawsuit and investigation, and “Griddy will work with it in good faith to resolve these matters,” the attorney general said.

Use smart power strips

“Phantom loads,” or the electricity used by electronics when they are turned off or in standby mode, are a major source of energy waste.

In fact, it is estimated that 75% of the energy used to power household electronics is consumed when they are switched off, which can cost you up to $200 per year.

Smart power strips, also known as advanced power strips, eliminate the problem of phantom loads by shutting off the power to electronics when they are not in use.

Smart power strips can be set to turn off at an assigned time, during a period of inactivity, through remote switches, or based on the status of a “master” device. There are plenty to choose from to fit your needs.
