On January 29th, the Harris County Commissioners Court will consider a proposal to fund an additional 131 detention officers for the Harris County Jail (agenda item 99 here). Check out our toolkit at bit.ly/NoMoreJailers to learn how you can join the Community Safety Budget coalition in calling for investments in true community safety, instead of more jailers! We’re joining the demand for an Arms Embargo on Israel!

Houston has a direct role to play in stopping this genocide. By ending all arms shipments for Israel in the Port of Houston, we can help shut down the supply chain of death.

Share this petition with your friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers. Together we make a dent in Israel’s war machine and help end this genocide!

Sign the petition now using the link in our bio. Follow for future updates about the campaign.

12 people have died in Harris County jail custody this year!

And yet Harris County Commissioners continue to advance a plan to try and build a new “mental health jail” estimated to cost taxpayers HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS IF NOT MORE!! We need your help to stop it!

Speak out with us and for our communities against the new jail on Thursday, August 14th, at 10 am, at 1001 Preston St., Houston, TX 77002, Commissioners Court.

Houstonians deserve to receive medical care without intervention or interaction with the criminal legal system. The idea that Houstonians will receive the best care in jail is not only misguided, but it is a misuse of taxpayer dollars.

The criminal legal system has no business providing medical services to people in crisis. We’ve seen this time and time again but we have not learned the lesson and unfortunately another family has paid the price. Alex Cardenas, who died this month in Harris County jail wanted help! When he stopped the Houston Police Department trying to seek help, he was arrested, taken to jail and denied mental health care for over 30 hours! This county is more interested in charging people for traffic violations of over 10 years ago and shipping away folks awaiting pre-trial to Louisiana and Mississippi but we can’t even provide folks at home basic medical needs.

40+ community members testified at Houston City Council yesterday to demand an end to HPD’s collaboration with ICE. Recent data has confirmed that HPD is going above and beyond the minimum requirements of state law to share information with ICE at traffic stops, increasing the detention and deportation of our community members. Yesterday, the community spoke loud and clear - ICE OUT OF HOUSTON! .counsel .houston
