A great day in Houston! Two fantastic grand openings! The Hill at Sims park and trails in Sunnyside and the Main Street Promenade in Downtown.

The Hill at Sims is breathtaking! And huge - 100 acres. George and I walked up to the HILL where you can see forever, the downtown skyline, the Med Center, Galleria, Greenway Plaza, Midtown, it’s all there! Also beautiful nature trails and most importantly, 1000-acre feet of stormwater storage! A great place to ride bikes, take walks, and explore the great outdoors. This is a MUST SEE in Houston. Thirty-million thanks to Commissioner Rodney Ellis, State Representative Alma A. Allen, Congressman Al Green, and the Houston Parks Board for making this regional park a priority. What a treasure!

Next we went to the reception for the opening of the Main Street Promenade. Wider pedestrian realm for seven blocks, more space for restaurants and bars, a wonderful blue and white tile Main Street mosaic, shade structures, trees, artwork - Houston is well on its way to a much more vibrant street scene downtown! And opening just in time for our FIFA World Cup visitors. Props to Downtown Houston Plus for leading this transformative project!

Houston Health Department Director Dr. Theresa Tran briefed City Council today with an Ebola preparedness update ahead of the World Cup.

The latest outbreak was declared May 15 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but thanks to strong U.S. and local infrastructure, Ebola is not a public threat in Houston or Harris County.

Only U.S. citizens returning from affected regions (DRC, Sudan, Uganda) are allowed into the country, and they undergo strict CDC screening plus a 21‑day monitoring process. IAH was selected as one of three U.S. entry airports, and Houston’s public health teams are fully coordinated with CDC, DHS, HPD, HFD, SETRAC, and others.

Dr. Tran emphasized that most World Cup attendees are U.S. travelers and that international fans from affected regions won’t be permitted to enter if they’ve been in those countries within the last 21 days.

Bottom line: Houston is prepared, protected, and ready for the World Cup. To stay informed, visit HHD at houstonhealth.org, and follow guidance by the CDC and DHS to keep our community safe and protected.

Honoring the soldiers who gave their lives for freedom🇺🇸

Happy Memorial Day!

Honoring all the members of our armed forces who gave what President Abraham Lincoln called "the last full measure of devotion," Memorial Day is one of the most important and solemn days on the National Mall. Across 250 years of American history, starting with those who fell while fighting alongside General George Washington in the Revolutionary War to recent conflicts, we will never forget our heroes. The military memorials on the National Mall are stunning tributes to hundreds of thousands of people who laid down their lives for freedom. Today we lay wreaths at these special places, but every day, walking past stone walls and metal statues, we recognize the loved and lost and offer the thanks of a grateful nation.
