Join Houston Audubon at their Swift Night Out August 19 & 26 https://houstonaudubon.org/chimneyswifts

Get ready for an amazing evening with nature’s aerial acrobats! houston Audubon’s family-friendly Swift Night Out events offer a unique chance to witness the incredible lives of Chimney Swifts. These remarkable birds spend nearly their entire lives on the wing, only pausing to roost or nest. They even bathe in flight! Historically these birds nested in hollow trees, but they’ve lost much of their natural habitat to development and are now dependent on manmade structures for nesting. At Swift Night Out, we’ll gather to watch these captivating birds swoop and soar over their roosts and will count them as they enter their chimney.

Join Artist Boat on Galveston Island for a 3 mile wildlife corridor cleanup on September 20th between 8 Mile and 11 Mile Road! Check out their website for details!

We're cleaning up Galveston and hope you can join us on September 20 during National Estuaries Week!

Help Artist Boat clean up the 3-mile wildlife corridor on Stewart Road between 8 Mile Road and 11 Mile Road on September 20 beginning at 7:30 a.m. We are sure you will agree that these roads are in need of a deep clean.

The road debris that has accumulated along this 3-mile stretch includes materials, substances, and objects that are foreign to the normal roadway environment. The Artist Boat 3-Mile Wildlife Corridor Garbage Conservation Clean-Up Project will beautify these highly trafficked stretches of roadway adjacent to conserved land where wildlife can be harmed.

The recyclables that are collected by the volunteers will be sent to a nearby recycling facility for processing. Incorporating recycling into the event is truly the perfect way to help the environment for future generations. Roadside debris will be collected in a roll off trash dumpster and transported by a local waste management disposal company.

Will you help Artist Boat responsibly pick up thousands of pounds of liter, recyclables, and debris? Scan the QR or click here to volunteer https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/artistboat/items/656885/calendar/2025/09/?blm_aid=0&full-items=yes&g4=yes

Our friends from Houston Audubon spotted a Great Lakes Piping Plover at Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary: https://houstonaudublog.org/2025/08/06/great-lakes-piping-plover-spotted-at-bolivar-flats-shorebird-sanctuary/

Houston Audubon excited to introduce everyone to a “new” Piping Plover at Bolivar Flats – “VGV” (short for ”Violet, Dark Green, Violet”)! This female Piping Plover was born in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (Lake Superior), Wisconsin in 2023. She is a "Great Lakes" bird, of which there are only approximately 80 pairs nesting in any given year. This discovery provides exciting and tangible evidence of Bolivar Flats' interconnectedness to places throughout the Western Hemisphere and sometimes beyond. Learn more about VGV in our latest blog post.

Matagorda Bay Foundation has several restoration projects in progress! Go check out their page and visit Matagorda County!

Here is another project the Matagorda Bay Foundation has in the works - Oliver Point and Oliver Reef restoration . For those who may not remember, Oliver Pt. and Reef received significant damage from hurricane Claudette in 2003.

We initiated the project 5-6 years ago and have been working steadily to get the funding we needed to move it forward. Well, we have reached the point where all studies and permits are in place, and now we are looking for construction money. We are hopeful we can start building the project in 2026 -we are waiting to hear about a pending funding request.

The project is designed to prevent further wetland loss at Oliver Point, protect C**n Island Bay and the shell ridge islands, re-establish the old Oliver Reef, and hopefully provide additional fishing opportunities a bit closer to town than Halfmoon Reef. The reef we are proposing is a bit different from the picture - we are only planning to build the last 9 rows at the deep (west end) of the image.

We want to serve the people of Matagorda County and bring habitat restoration and shoreline protection funds to Matagorda County. We hold regular stakeholder meetings in Palacios, Matagorda, Bay City, and Sargent to get input on concerns and project ideas to help guide Foundation priorities. We post our meeting schedules on Facebook and Instagram. If you want to help us, please come to our meetings and tells us what you think are the issues we need to focus on for the future.

Our current vision for future projects are- seagrass loss on the south shoreline of East Matagorda, Oyster reef restoration/creation (another post will be coming on this topic.), bird island enhancement to protect nesting and forage habitats.

Thank you to the Mary Moody Northen Endowment for making a Lone Star Coastal trip to D.C. possible.

Over the course of two days, we met with key congressional offices—including Representatives Troy Nehls, Randy Weber, and Wesley Hunt—as well as senior staff from Senator Ted Cruz’s office, the Department of the Interior, and the House Subcommittee on Public Lands. We also engaged with national partners from the U.S. Sportsmen’s Coalition and representatives from the Texas Sportsmen’s Caucus.
