DID YOU KNOW? 🗳️ The 19th Amendment was a major victory for women’s suffrage. But ratification did not mean equal access to the ballot for every woman.

Women of color continued to face poll taxes, literacy tests, intimidation, and other forms of voter suppression, as well as barriers tied to citizenship, race, and discriminatory state voting laws.

The 19th Amendment changed the Constitution. It didn’t erase discrimination at the polls.

That fight continued for decades.

DID YOU KNOW? 🗳️ Today, August 26, marks the certification of the 19th Amendment.

First introduced in Congress in 1878, the amendment took more than 40 years to become part of the Constitution. It prohibited denying the right to vote based on s*x.

BUT that DID NOT mean EVERY woman could vote freely.

Many women of color continued to face discrimination and other barriers that kept them from the ballot box.

That’s where the story continues.
