Alzheimer's Association: Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter

Twenty five years ago, our nation changed forever. This morning, our Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter paused to remember, and to reflect on why we choose to hold on to a piece of that day.

Our chapter office is home to a fourteen foot section of PATH train railway that once ran beneath the World Trade Center. We keep it not just as a piece of history, but as a physical reminder to never forget, a phrase that carries special weight for the families we serve every day, many of whom are living with memory loss and can no longer hold onto memories the way the rest of us can.

This morning's ceremony was co-hosted by Houston City Council Member Joaquin Martinez and emceed by Marcelino Benito KHOU. Attendees were captivated by reflections from our own Liz Gorman, Navy combat veteran Chris Fahey who served in Iraq, and a closing message on unity from Bishop Frank A. Rush.

It was a powerful morning, and a reminder of why remembering matters, for our country and for the families we walk alongside every day.

💜 September is World Alzheimer’s Month, a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, reducing stigma, and supporting individuals and families affected by memory loss. Throughout the month, organizations and communities around the world encourage education, conversation, and connection to help improve understanding of dementia and the challenges faced by caregivers.

💌 As part of World Alzheimer’s Month, caregivers, family members, and friends are invited to join the Caregiver Connection Support Group on Friday, September 11, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. This welcoming virtual meeting provides an opportunity to share experiences, ask questions, learn practical caregiving strategies, and connect with others who understand the dementia caregiving journey. Everyone is welcome.

Join us tomorrow for a free screening of "Unforgettable," a film adaptation of the acclaimed stage play, presented in partnership with Gdavis TV. The film follows a family's experience with an Alzheimer's diagnosis and supports our mission to increase awareness of the disease, encourage early detection, and expand participation in clinical trials among underrepresented communities.

Shoutout to TX-09 Advocate Kennan Bernard-Kravitz! His Letter to the Editor supporting the Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act was recently published in the Forward Times

He urged Congressman Rep. Al Green to support the bipartisan ASAP Act which would create a pathway for Medicare coverage of FDA-approved blood tests that can detect Alzheimer's before symptoms appear. Earlier detection can help individuals and families access care, plan ahead, and connect with available treatment options sooner.

Last Saturday, our team headed to Memorial Park for the Runner's High Club event, where we joined Run for the Reason runners and fellow organizations to share our mission. 💜

Through Do What You Love, we partner with the Houston Marathon's Run for the Reason program. Choose the Alzheimer's Association as your charity and we cover your registration fee. Full and half marathon spots are sold out, but we still have five 5K spots open for anyone who wants to run with purpose.

It was a great morning meeting people connected to this disease and talking about why this work matters.
