At times, the pain in the public safety sector is almost tangible. But on rare occasion, there are moments that result in a win so significant that it makes you remember why you continue in such a difficult job.
This evening, a January life save was celebrated with members of Amelia Emergency Squad, Amelia Volunteer Fire Dept, the Amelia Sheriff’s Office and ACFEMS. Life or death success stories are rare, and we will forever treasure this one. A special thank you to the patient, their family, and HCA for their presence and support this evening.

πŸš’ Today, A-shift dedicated time to enhancing our rural water pumping techniques through specialized training with Engine 1. Our focus is on mastering the art of drafting, particularly in scenarios where we don’t have access to pressurized or dry hydrants. One essential skill involves utilizing a floating strainer, which allows us to extract water from static sources such as lakes & ponds. By identifying these potential water sources, we ensure that we are always prepared to respond effectively, regardless of the circumstances. Continuous learning and adaptability are key to our mission! πŸ’§

Yesterday, our C shift and part-time staff engaged in a training session aimed at refining their critical thinking abilities in drafting. This initiative was geared toward equipping our staff with the necessary skills to handle various challenges they might face in their roles.

We focused on several vital areas, including:

-Responding to Mechanical Failures: Participants learned the essential protocols to follow during equipment breakdowns. By grasping these procedures, our team can act swiftly to mitigate disruptions and uphold safety standards.

-Acquiring Water Without a Primer. We discussed and practiced alternative methods for sourcing water in emergency situations, highlighting the significance of ingenuity and flexibility in tackling problems when standard approaches may not be available.

- Staying Composed at the Water Source: The training also covered strategies for maintaining calmness in high-stress environments near the water source. This skill is crucial for ensuring both personal safety and the overall effectiveness of our operations.

The knowledge and techniques acquired during this training are invaluable assets. By committing to thorough preparation today, we are establishing a robust framework that will serve us well into the future as we serve
the citizens of Amelia County. We will continue to build upon this foundation and pursue excellence in all our activities!
