Washington Court House, OH — Arbor Day Celebration and Tree Planting Ceremony
In honor of Arbor Day, the Washington Tree Committee, alongside the City of Washington Court House, proudly hosted a tree planting ceremony at Eyman Park. City officials and community members gathered to plant a commemorative tree, generously donated by Custom Lawn Care, symbolizing growth, sustainability, and a greener future.
Exciting New Initiative: Community Tree Nursery
The celebration also marked the launch of an exciting initiative: a community tree nursery established by the Tree Committee in partnership with the Fayette SWCD and the Fayette County YMCA. This year’s native shrub nursery will cultivate five native shrubs to be planted in local parks, replacing invasive honeysuckle. This project was made possible through collaboration between Change X funding, Fayette SWCD, the Tree Committee, the City Service Department, Carnegie Public Library, and the nursery site at the YMCA. The initiative, titled *Growing Better Parks: Roots to Words*, includes seven classes during the summer for YMCA summer camp participants and library summer program attendees to learn about native shrubs and their environmental significance. For more information, please contact the library.
Additional Tree Planting Efforts
In addition to the Arbor Day event, the city plans to plant an additional 40 trees this spring in public spaces throughout Washington Court House. This initiative is funded by a grant from the Ohio Division of Forestry and supports the city’s commitment to enhancing public green spaces and improving urban canopy cover. After these plantings, the total number of trees will reach 93, with a goal of over 175 trees planted during the grant cycle.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, the Tree Committee will diligently plan the locations for the next phase of tree plantings throughout the summer. Aiming to plant 100 more trees in the community, this initiative seeks to beautify neighborhoods, support local ecosystems, and foster community pride. Residents can request a tree for the tree lawn or front yard near the sidewalk by contacting the City of Washington Court House.
Arbor Day serves as a poignant reminder of the essential role trees play in our environment and daily lives. Washington Court House is proud to be recognized as a Tree City USA and is committed to investing in a greener, healthier future for all its residents.

2026 Poster Contest Announcement: Fayette Soil & Water Conservation District

This year’s artistic competition focused on the theme “Greening Our Streets with Trees.” Mrs. Knisley’s 5th-grade students at Belle Aire participated and the winners are as follows:

First Place: Airya
Second Place: Avago
Third Place: Isabella

We must also acknowledge Bailey, who received a special award for her outstanding creativity! 🌟

Last year, our community, with its strong commitment to environmental stewardship, planted over 50 trees. Thanks to a grant, an additional 40 trees are scheduled to be planted this spring and more in the coming couple of years. So, prepare your shovels and plant a tree. Remember, Arbor Day is this Friday!

Thank you, MT, for inviting me to discuss worms during Worm Day with the second graders at Miami Trace. The students explored worm fact cards, measured the worms, and crafted descriptions. It's fascinating to note how essential worms are for maintaining healthy soil.
