📣EMERGENCY INCIDENT📣

At 2:02 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026, the Houma Fire Department was dispatched to a reported apartment fire in the 7500 block of Park Avenue.

Upon arrival, crews observed smoke coming from second-story apartments as occupants were self-evacuating. Firefighters made their way to the rear of the building to locate and extinguish the fire. Primary searches were initiated immediately by first-arriving units; however, crews determined the fire was not accessible from the rear.

Firefighters from Ladder 3 made entry into a ground-floor apartment to continue the primary search. During this search, they located the seat of the fire along with one occupant who had not evacuated. The victim was removed to the front of the building as additional crews advanced hoselines to extinguish the fire.

The unconscious victim was brought to awaiting crews, and resuscitation efforts began immediately. The fire was brought under control shortly thereafter, and all occupants were accounted for. The fire was contained to a single apartment, with no extension beyond smoke damage to adjacent units.

Personnel from Acadian Ambulance Service, in consultation with medical control, determined the victim to be deceased. Resuscitation efforts were subsequently discontinued. The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal was notified, as required in fires involving fatalities, and responded to conduct an investigation.

Smoke detectors were present in the apartment but were destroyed in the fire.

Park Avenue was closed for the duration of the incident and investigation. No additional injuries were reported. Fire crews remained on scene was secured and occupants were allowed back into there apartments. The fire remainsnunder investigation at this time.

This incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of having working smoke detectors in every residence. Louisiana law (RS 40:1581) requires landlords to provide operable 10-year sealed lithium battery smoke detectors in rental properties, along with sealed battery carbon monoxide detectors as of January 1, 2023.

The Houma Fire Department, along with departments across Terrebonne Parish, offers free smoke detector installation for residents in need through the Operation Save-A-Life Louisiana Fire Marshal program.

We extend our thanks to Acadian Ambulance, Houma Police, Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office, Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal, Terrebonne Parish Communications District E-911 , Entergy Louisiana and the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government Gas Department for their assistance.

At approximately 4:17 PM, the Houma Fire Department was dispatched to the 200 block of Walnut Street in West Houma in response to a reported house fire.

Initial units arrived on scene within 3 minutes and found that the fire had already been extinguished by a passerby using a garden hose. Crews conducted a thorough assessment and identified minor exterior damage to the home, determined to have been caused by an improperly discarded cigarette.

Firefighters checked for any extension into the interior of the residence and confirmed that the fire had not spread beyond the exterior.

The homeowner and their pet safely evacuated prior to the arrival of emergency personnel and were not injured. After a brief investigation, the scene was turned over to the owner.

We would like to remind everyone to properly dispose of smoking materials, as careless disposal can quickly lead to unintended fires.

🚨 Emergency Incident – Structure Fire 🚨

At approximately 9:17 PM, the City of Houma Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire in the 9100 block of East Main Street.

The District Chief arrived first on scene and reported heavy fire showing from the Bravo and Charlie sides, with thick smoke visible throughout the structure. Due to the intensity of the fire and the size of the home, a second alarm was requested to bring in additional manpower.

Upon arrival, crews made contact with the occupants, who confirmed that everyone had safely exited the home. The first arriving fire company established a water supply and deployed a hoseline to begin an aggressive interior attack.

This incident marked the first field use of the department’s newly purchased 1¾-inch hoselines. Following training and testing, the hose performed as expected and allowed crews to quickly knock down the fire.

Firefighters conducted both primary and secondary searches of the residence, which fortunately yielded no victims.

The home is considered a total loss, with the majority of its contents destroyed. An HFD investigator responded to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. The residence is a rental property, and the landlord was on scene with the occupants.

At the time of this post, East Main Street remains closed while crews continue overhaul operations and the investigation remains ongoing. The roadway will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.

No injuries were reported.

We would like to thank Houma Police, Acadian Ambulance, Entergy, Terrebonne Parish Gas Department, and TPE911 dispatchers for their assistance in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion.

🚒 Structure Fire – Glenmore Ave | Houma, LA 🚒

At approximately 6:40 PM on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the Houma Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire in the 3200 block of Richmond Avenue on the east side of Houma.

Upon arrival, crews encountered a large single-story residence with heavy smoke showing from all sides. A working fire was declared, and a second alarm was requested to bring in additional manpower. A water supply was established, and crews made an aggressive interior attack in an attempt to locate the seat of the fire. The initial crew advanced approximately 40 feet into the structure before being forced to withdraw due to extreme heat conditions.

Additional hoselines were deployed as fire intensified, particularly in the garage area, while flames also vented through roof openings. Firefighters faced challenging conditions due to a metal roof attached directly to an asphalt shingle roof, preventing proper vertical ventilation and causing fire to push laterally throughout the structure. The home’s construction—featuring tongue-and-groove wood throughout the walls, ceilings, and roof decking—provided extensive fuel, allowing the fire to rapidly intensify.

A third alarm was called, bringing 10 additional firefighters from the Bayou Cane Fire Protection District. Power to the area was secured by the local utility company to allow aerial operations; however, a partial roof collapse limited the effectiveness of ladder operations. Crews regrouped and returned to handlines, continuing aggressive suppression efforts in areas deemed safe.

Firefighters worked for several hours to locate and extinguish hidden fire throughout the structure. One occupant was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and is expected to recover. The residence was deemed a total loss. No firefighter injuries were reported.

Crews remained on scene until midnight, conducting overhaul and ensuring the fire was fully extinguished.
