United Houma Nation artist, musician, and storyteller Grayhawk Perkins' crawfish story inspired “Year of the Crawfish: Big Changes Start with Small Beings", the theme for the 38th Annual Moundville Native American Festival, which takes place October 1-3, 2026 in Moundville, Alabama.

The festival offers three days of Native American culture, food, art, music, and storytelling among the ancient mounds at Moundville Archaeological Park, located 13 miles south of Tuscaloosa. Now Accepting Bids! – United Houma Nation Administration Building Reconstruction (Houma, LA)

The United Houma Nation is seeking qualified contractors to bid on the reconstruction of the UHN Administration Building at 400 Monarch Drive, Houma, LA 70364. This work is Phase 1 of the United Houma Nation RISING project and is funded by a 2024 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Resilience Regional Challenge grant.

The project will retrofit the existing structure (heavily damaged by Hurricane Ida and ongoing stormwater issues) with a resilient Central Community Resilience Hub designed for both everyday operations and post-disaster response.

PROJECT SCOPE (Summary):
- Removal of the damaged pieces of the structure and most of the foundation
- Update and retrofitting construction of a flood-, wind-, and energy-resilient building
- Facility will include a commercial kitchen, offices, meeting spaces, archive/document storage, and features to support normal operations and emergency response

KEY DATES:
September 8 – Bids open for submission at noon
September 22 – Mandatory Bid Conference
October 16 – Bid due by noon on this date. Sealed bids will not be opened publicly.

The UHN Election Board announces the preliminary results of the 2026 Principal Chief Election. The votes were verified by the Election Board this evening, and the total vote count is as follows:

Lora Ann Chaisson - 287 votes (56.16%)

Adam Crappel - 224 votes (43.84%)

The candidates were present for the vote count.

"Thank you to all of the voters who came out to vote," said Chief Chaisson. "Mr. Crappel congratulated me this evening. I'm honored to lead the United Houma Nation during the next four years!"

As we move through the middle of hurricane season, the United Houma Nation Office of Emergency Management reminds everyone that now is not the time to become complacent. It only takes one storm to impact our families and communities.

Take time this week to:
• Review your family emergency plan.
• Check and replenish hurricane supplies.
• Replace expired food, medications, and batteries.
• Confirm your evacuation destination.
• Continue monitoring trusted weather and emergency information.

The middle of hurricane season is a good time to reset, restock, and remain ready.

A Houma Nation connection to Gloria Steinem’s legacy.

In 2008, United Houma Nation Principal Chief Brenda Dardar Robichaux received the Gloria Steinem Woman of Vision Award from the Ms. Foundation for Women.

The honor recognized her leadership, especially her work helping Houma families and empowering tribal women in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

With Gloria Steinem’s passing this week, we look back on this moment and an important chapter in United Houma Nation history.
