Isle Royale & Keweenaw Parks Association

Isle Royale & Keweenaw Parks Association Isle Royale became a national park in 1940, a federally designated Wilderness Area in 1976, and an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980.

The Isle Royale & Keweenaw Parks Association is the member-supported, nonprofit cooperating association for Isle Royale National Park and Keweenaw National Historical Park. Founded in 1957, the Isle Royale Natural History Association first partnered with Isle Royale National Park, a unique and remote island archipelago surrounded by Lake Superior. Since 1958, it has been home to the famous ecologi

cal study of wolves and moose that is the longest running large mammal predator-prey study on earth. In 2008, the Association's name changed to acknowledge its expansion to support Keweenaw National Historical Park, which was created in 1992 to tell the story of copper mining on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula from 7,000 years ago to the late 1900s. The park includes 19 public, private, and nonprofit partner sites in four counties, called Keweenaw Heritage Sites, and two federally designated national park units – Quincy and Calumet – located at the sites of former large-scale copper mines. Most property within the units is privately owned. The park's third superintendent termed this unusual collaboration among public and private entities a "parknership."

β˜€οΈThe sun is shining on the Keweenaw this week! I had a great tour and visit of Painsdale Mine & Shaft and the Champion #4 Shaft-Rock House. A one of a kind opportunity when you are in the Keweenaw. The grounds are open for exploration during daylight hours, and guided tours are offered Fridays and Saturdays at noon (including a stair climb to the top of the shaft-rock house)!
