This community exists because people show up in every role, and EMS is one of the most important. Most of our local crews are volunteers with regular jobs and regular lives, who drop everything when a call comes in.

Out here, that matters more than most riders realize. In a lot of rural areas, EMS response times run several hours longer than in cities, and the distance between a trailhead and real medical care can be significant. That gap gets covered by people who train on their own time, carry radios on their days off, and show up regardless of weather, terrain, or how far into the woods someone went down.

To every EMS worker, first responder, and volunteer medic who's ever answered that call for a rider: thank you. You're doing a hard job in a hard place, mostly on your own time, and mostly without anyone knowing your name. You're a gift to this whole community, and one worth celebrating loudly. Thank you Copper Harbor Fire Department, Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office, and Keweenaw Search and Rescue.

A real reminder, from us to you:

The riding here can be serious and remote. Help isn't always five minutes away, and the trails don't care how experienced you are. So do your part: wear a helmet, ride with a buddy when you can, and be ready with a plan if things go sideways.

I attended my first Community Corrections Advisory Board meeting today. I was very impressed with the difference from the previous Tri-County Community Corrections Board from years past.

A very successful collaborative program has been set in motion. In cooperation with the State of Michigan and Michigan's Department of Corrections the Pre-Trial services offered to the Keweenaw is matched by no other.

The Waste Management driver is pretty upset with people tossing tires, wheels, couches and other assorted large items into the dumpsters in Allouez and Mohawk. Come on people this is ment for household garbage only! People should should not take advantage of this ...it's illegal dumping.

He said this will more than likely change next year. A meet the truck hours for garbage could happen.

Interesting information posted from a Planning Commission meeting held in Chassell last week!

Last Thursday, Joe Reini from Quincy Materials briefed the Chassell Township Planning Commission during public comment about the company's early stage consideration of Chassell Township among other sites for processing the Gay Stamp sands threatening the Buffalo Reef as well as the stamp sands from other locations. Their interest in Chassell appeared to be based in large part on the long dock at Portage Entry which is protected from Lake Superior. The Planning Commission informed Joe that this part of the township is in the rural zoning district where this type of operation would not be a permitted use and would require an application to re-zone if they decided to pursue the project which would require a public hearing before a decision could be made to allow such an activity. Joe described that the total footprint for all operations, including parking, would require a space less than the size of a football field. He described a gravitational process for processing the stamp sand which would separate the remaining copper bearing material from the basalt without chemicals and that the basalt could be used to substitute for some amount of cement in concrete. The facility envisioned would employ 40 to 60 employees. Concern was raised about sound and about traffic on Portage Entry Road which is already in serious need of repair. The operation would also require three phase power which is not currently available at Portage Entry. There was discussion about a better potential location outside of the township. Residents present at the meeting expressed overwhelming opposition to the project. Based on the feedback received during the meeting, Chassell Township is no longer under active consideration for the project based on community input.
