WHAT LABOR DAY MEANS TO THE FIRE SERVICE

Labor Day is a time to recognize the hard work, dedication, and contributions of working men and women across our country.

In the fire service, that meaning runs especially deep.

Every day, firefighters, dispatchers, EMS professionals, law enforcement officers, utility workers, public works crews, and countless others show up to serve their communities—often during nights, weekends, holidays, and difficult conditions.

For many first responders, Labor Day is not a day off. It is another day to answer the call, protect our neighbors, and be ready when our community needs us most.

Lake Hamilton Fire is fully staffed today, and we will also have a dedicated crew on Lake Hamilton staffing one of our fire boats with a Pafford Medic to provide added coverage and a rapid response to emergencies on or around the water.

Today, we recognize all those whose hard work strengthens our communities and keeps them moving forward.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND LAKE COVERAGE

Lake Hamilton Fire will have a fire boat staffed with firefighters and a Pafford EMS medic on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday throughout the Labor Day weekend.

This dedicated lake coverage allows us to quickly respond to emergencies on or around the lake, including medical emergencies, boating accidents, fires, and other incidents where rapid water access can make a difference.

We are proud to continue working alongside Pafford EMS to provide an added level of protection for residents and visitors enjoying our lakes this holiday weekend.

Please boat responsibly, wear your life jacket, designate a sober operator, and call 911 immediately if you see or experience an emergency.

All 75 Arkansas counties are now under high wildfire risk, and more than 65 counties have active burn bans. Persistent drought and extremely dry vegetation mean fires can start easily, spread rapidly, and become difficult to control. As we head into the holiday weekend, we’re asking all Arkansans to stay alert and take steps to reduce wildfire ignition.

Please take these precautions:

- Avoid all outdoor burning. This includes campfires, trash burning, grilling with open flames, and any prescribed or controlled burns.
- Never leave any outdoor flame unattended.
- Use caution when driving or operating equipment near dry vegetation. Avoid driving over tall or dry grass, ensure trailer chains aren’t dragging, and do not drive on flat tires.
- Properly extinguish and dispose of ci******es—never discard them outdoors.
- Report smoke or fire immediately by calling 1‑800‑468‑8834.

Stay informed by monitoring the Department’s county‑by‑county fire map, reviewing active incidents on the wildfire dashboard, and following our updates on social media.

**LABOR DAY WEEKEND SAFETY REMINDER**

As we head into Labor Day weekend, Lake Hamilton Fire wants everyone to enjoy the holiday safely.

If you are spending time on the lakes, please wear life jackets, designate a sober boat operator, watch your speed, and stay alert for other boaters, swimmers, and changing conditions.

We are also continuing to deal with **excessive heat**. Drink plenty of water, limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, take frequent breaks, and check on children, older adults, and anyone who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness.

Both Garland County and Hot Spring County remain under **burn bans**. As a reminder, the county ordinance states, in part:

“It shall be unlawful for any person to burn leaves, trash, garbage, yard waste, construction debris, or ANY COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL IN ANY CONTAINER.”

Please do not take chances with outdoor burning. Conditions remain extremely dry, and even a small fire can spread quickly.

Lake Hamilton Fire fully supports the decision to cancel the Labor Day fireworks display due to the current burn ban and extremely dry conditions.

Lake Hamilton Fire reviewed and approved the fireworks permit prior to the burn ban being issued. As conditions have continued to deteriorate, the safety of our community, visitors, and first responders must remain the priority.

We appreciate Visit Hot Springs and everyone involved for making the responsible decision based on current conditions. We also ask everyone to continue following the burn ban and help us reduce the risk of fires throughout our area.

The annual free public Hot Springs Labor Day fireworks display scheduled for Sunday on Lake Hamilton has been cancelled due to the county-wide burn ban.

“Out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with city, county and the county’s various fire departments, we have decided to cancel this year‘s fireworks,” said Devin Heath, CEO of Visit Hot Springs, which sponsors the annual display.

“Garland County is under a burn ban caused by the extended period of hot, dry conditions,” Heath said. “We ask everyone who will be in Hot Springs and Garland County to join us in observing the burn ban and stay safe for this one weekend.”

“We understand how thousands of visitors and residents enjoy the free public fireworks we sponsor each year on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, but there will be plenty of holidays in the future for us to enjoy those displays.”

“Everyone celebrate this Labor Day Weekend and enjoy all the many other activities and attractions we have for you here in Hot Springs.”

Lake Hamilton Fire would like to remind everyone that the burn ban remains in effect. Much of Arkansas is currently experiencing a high wildfire risk due to the continued hot and dry conditions.

Please help us protect our community:

• Do not burn while the burn ban is in effect.
• Use extreme caution with anything that could create a spark or start a fire.
• Never discard ci******es or other smoking materials outdoors.
• If you see a fire or smoke, call 911 immediately.

Effective **8:00 a.m. today**, both counties are under a **burn ban** due to the combination of extreme heat, rapidly drying conditions, and the increased threat of wildfire.

These conditions can allow even a small fire to spread quickly and become difficult to control. Lake Hamilton Fire is asking everyone to do their part by avoiding outdoor burning and being especially cautious with anything that could produce a spark or flame.
