Hot Springs, in the Vale of Minnekahta (warm waters) 3,559 feet above the sea, guarded by majestic old Battle Mountain, 5,000 feet high on one side, and by the Seven Sisters on the other, is the Southern Gateway of the Black Hills. The warm, clear water of Fall River, formed at the north end of the city by the combining of brooks tumbling out of Hot and Cold Brook canyons, hastens down one side of
the principal business street, built on the old canyon floor. The waters never freeze and vivid green water cress grows throughout the year while fish and water fowl bask in the pools through winter and summer. Hot Springs is the only place in South Dakota that can boast of having thermal springs...no bubbling cauldron sends forth sulfurous vapor, no scalding geyser or mud volcano fills the air with steam or chokes the individual with foul gases... simply warm waters and warm welcomes.
