May 16-May 22, 2026 was declared Arkansas Safe Boating Week by Proclamation of Governor Sarah Sanders.
The Proclamation was presented to Arkansas State Boating Law Administrator SGT Sydney Grant at the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission by newly certified AuxPAD Operators Ellen Sullivan (USCG Aux Little Rock) and Deborah Blackburn (USCG Aux Hot Springs). Immediately following the presentation, the AuxPad program was explained to SGT Grant and how it will promote safe boating practices on our inland waters. The operators, who are also USCG Aux Vessel Examiners, went on to conduct 44 Vessel Safety Checks at Lake Catherine State Park & Marina.

Dialing in on the rapidly escalating numbers of paddle craft and increase in fatal accidents is a sobering way to start off Safe Boating Week…BUT, by instilling safety through education, training, and support, we can help paddlers defend themselves from the threat of accidents, and maintain an overall safe, orderly and resilient waterway system.

Consider taking a AGFC Safe Boating Course and wear a life jacket when on or around the water!
