HSAS had the privilege of being called upon to provide medical support on the South Fork Fire.
We are grateful for the opportunity, and people we met along the way!

🚨🐍 Rattlesnake Awareness in Rapid City 🐍🚨

Our Animal Control Officers wanted to share a little information with our community due to a recent increase in rattlesnake bite incidents being reported in and around Rapid City.

Rattlesnakes are a natural part of the Black Hills ecosystem and play an important role in controlling rodent populations. While encounters can be alarming, most bites occur when people or pets get too close or attempt to handle a snake.

As temperatures rise and more people are enjoying the outdoors, please keep the following in mind:

• Stay alert in rocky areas, tall grass, wood piles, and along trails.
• Keep dogs leashed and under control when hiking.
• Watch where you place your hands and feet.
• Never attempt to touch, corner, relocate, or kill a rattlesnake.
• Give snakes plenty of space and allow them a safe escape route.

If you encounter a rattlesnake:
🐍 Stay calm.
🐍 Slowly back away.
🐍 Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
🐍 Warn others in the area.

If a person or pet is bitten:
⚠️ Seek immediate medical or veterinary attention.
⚠️ Keep movement to a minimum.
⚠️ Do not attempt old home remedies such as cutting the wound, sucking out venom, or applying ice.

Rattlesnakes don’t want to interact with people any more than we want to interact with them. A little awareness and caution can help keep both our community and our local wildlife safe.

Stay safe out there, Rapid City—and enjoy the beautiful Black Hills responsibly!

Last but not least, here is to our paramedics of Hot Springs Ambulance Service. They are highly trained emergency medical professionals who stabilize critically ill or injured patients outside the hospital. Paramedics perform advanced, life-saving procedures like starting IV's, administering medications and managing airways. Paramedics must complete approximately 1,200-1,800 hours of intense training, and continuing training as long as they hold a license. Please stop us and say hi if you see any of our wonderful crews out and about. (We all really like Daves) 🤪

We are taking today to appreciate our AEMT's in our group! Advanced EMT's are a mid-level EMS provider, bridging the gap between basic and paramedic level ALS interventions. Our advances have to complete another 150-180 hours on top of their EMT-B credentials. We love our advanced EMT's!

Today, we would like to take a minute to honor our Emergency Medical Technicians during this EMS week. These are some of the amazing faces you can see out in public or on a call. EMT's provide pre-hospital basic life support and medical transportation for emergent patients. To become an EMT-B, you must successfully complete a state approved program that ranges from 120-180 hours. EMT's absolutely save paramedics, and we have some of the best!
