All who are interested in improving the lives of the residents of the Hornsby Bend Area, please join us next Thursday at 6, at the new Community Healthcare center Sandifer and Gilbert Refreshments will be served

To start a community development corporation, take these 10 steps:

define the community need and geographic boundaries
find some like-minded individuals
form a steering committee
discuss your statement of need and preferred focus areas with the steering committee and with community members you meet as you attend neighborhood events, and refine your mission and territory based on feedback
determine whether you will duplicate efforts of any existing organization, and if so, try to join or reform it
share your vision informally with additional community members and with any community leaders you believe might be supportive, and incorporate their criticisms and priorities
provide a face-to-face forum in which all interested individuals are invited to learn of the vision of the steering committee
consider carefully how you will have enough money to complete one or two early projects, which usually requires a partnership with a major corporation, philanthropic organization, or local government
find a sympathetic attorney who will do some early work for you pro bono (free), schedule a consultation with that attorney, then discuss and determine the legal form of the corporation, and recruit and name an initial board of directors
name officers and take other steps required to actually start a community development corporation, get some money together, and apply for non-profit status providing you choose this most common form of organization.

What is a Community Development Corporation?

Community development corporations (CDCs) are 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations that are created to support and revitalize communities, especially those that are impoverished or struggling. CDCs often deal with the development of affordable housing. They can also be involved in a wide range of community services that meet local needs such as education, job training, healthcare, commercial development, and other social programs.

Press release

Who does Central Health Serve?

Join the
Underserved Residents of Del Valle, the Gray Panthers of Texas and other Concerned Citizens for a Press Conference

Austin, Texas: The taxpaying communities of East Travis County have been denied basic healthcare that they have already paid for. On Wednesday, August 30th at 5:00 p.m. residents of Del Valle , and others will hold a press conference in front of the Central Health Administrative Offices at 1111 E. Cesar Chavez Street. They will demand facilities and accountability from Central Health, transparency in the budget, and hold Central Health and its Board accountable to their original charge as stated in their MISSION STATEMENT, "
By caring for those who need it most, Central Health improves the health of our community

The board will hold a public hearing at 6 pm.

Is Central Health a provider of community healthcare services, and if so, who do they serve? Funding allocations are contrary to Central Health's mission, 85% were allocated towards salaries rather than on service delivery. This year, the organization has a budget of over $200 million , is seeking an increase in funding to the tune of $11.7 million dollars, while dedicating $1.5 dollars to an area that encompasses the Del Valle area (172 sq mi) that has no facilities. The Central Health Board must be held accountable for their negligence.

Join us Wednesday at 5 pm as we send a strong message to the Central Health Board

: Benjamin Singleton

Benjamin “Pap” Singleton was an American activist and businessman best known for his role in establishing African-American settlements in Kansas. Held in slavery in Tennessee, Singleton escaped to freedom in 1846 and became a noted abolitionist, community leader and spokesman for African-American civil rights. He returned to Tennessee during the Union occupation in 1862, but soon concluded that Blacks would never achieve economic equality in the white-dominated South. After the end of Reconstruction, Singleton organized the movement of thousands of Black colonists, known as Exodusters, to found settlements in Kansas. A prominent early voice for Black nationalism, he became involved in promoting and coordinating Black-owned businesses in Kansas, and developed an interest in the Back-to-Africa movement.

I've not shared this page with a lot of "our" folks We have often been undone by our own. I trust that you have nothing but love for our community, therefore this page

This is an opportunity for us to control everything about our lives, and leave a legacy that will endure the ages. We can control the government, the educational process, the means of production and distribution, our health , wealth and security (up to and including and police force that is fully loaded to protect us).

Post back with ideas and suggestions. We all have the knowledge
