City of Hoquiam Awarded $2 Million Public Works Board Grant
for Broadway Road Project

State investment will help advance critical safety and
infrastructure improvements on Broadway Avenue

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HOQUIAM, Wash. -The City of Hoquiam has received a $2,000,000 grant from the
Washington State Department of Commerce Public Works Board to support the
Broadway Road Project, a major infrastructure improvement effort focused on roadway
reconstruction, drainage upgrades, disaster resiliency and public safety along Broadway
Avenue.

The grant will help move forward improvements on a key corridor serving the Woodlawn
neighborhood, Hoquiam Plywood Co., and east Hoquiam residents. The project is
intended to address long-standing roadway instability, improve drainage, restore reliable
access, and increase safety for residents, businesses, emergency responders, and visitors.
“This grant is a major investment in Hoquiam's future," said Mayor Ben Winkelman.

"Broadway Avenue is an important connection for our community, and these funds will
help us support public safety, maintain access, and improve infrastructure that residents
and businesses rely on every day. I appreciate the efforts of our staff to pursue and secure
this funding, which significantly reduces the City's financial burden to complete this
critical project."

The Broadway Road Project includes reconstruction of the failing roadway, drainage
improvements, slope and roadway stabilization, guardrail installation, utility work,
culvert replacement, and related safety enhancements. By leveraging state support
through the Public Works Board, the City will be better positioned to complete
improvements that would otherwise place a significant financial burden on local
resources.

"The City appreciates the Washington State Department of Commerce and the Public
Works Board for recognizing the importance of this project," said Brian Shay, City
Administrator. "This funding strengthens our disaster resiliency and helps us continue
the work necessary to improve transportation infrastructure and support economic
activity in Hoquiam.

The City will provide additional information about construction timelines, traffic impacts, and public
updates as the project progresses on the City's FB page and website. Phase one construction is currently
underway, led by Rognlin's Construction. Phase 2 Construction will begin in spring 2027.

The Public Works Board provides funding to eligible local governments for critical public infrastructure,
including roads, bridges, water, wastewater, stormwater, solid waste, recycling and organics, and
broadband systems.

Broadway Road Construction Traffic Notice

Construction changes are taking place on the Broadway Road Project. As part of the next phase of construction, a section of the Broadway Road will be reduced to a single lane of traffic controlled by a traffic signal.

This traffic configuration is expected to remain in place for the next few weeks, until traffic can be transferred to the newly constructed roadway.

Please use caution while traveling through the construction area and allow for additional travel time. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as this work continues.

Traffic Advisory: Brief Delays Expected on Broadway Avenue for Utility Pole Relocation
HOQUIAM, WA — Motorists traveling in either direction on Broadway Avenue should expect delays while construction crews relocate a utility pole as part of the Broadway Safety Improvement Project on Tuesday September 8th.
Delays are expected between 8:15 a.m. and noon. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, use caution through the work zone, and follow all traffic control signs and crew directions.
The City of Hoquiam appreciates the public’s patience as this work is completed. The Broadway Safety Improvement Project is intended to improve roadway safety and reliability for residents, businesses, emergency responders and travelers using the corridor.

City of Hoquiam Receives Clean Audit for 2025 Financial Statements and Federal Grants
Washington State Auditor issues unmodified opinion on City’s 2025 financial statements
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HOQUIAM, Wash. — September 2, 2026 — The City of Hoquiam announced today that it has received a clean audit for its 2025 Financial Statements and Federal Grants from the Washington State Auditor’s Office. The audit report, published August 31, 2026, covered the period January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2025, and stated that the Auditor issued an unmodified opinion on the fair presentation of the City’s financial statements in accordance with its regulatory basis of accounting.
The audit also reviewed the City’s compliance with federal laws and regulations related to federal grant activity. In 2025, the City managed four federal grants totaling $4,615,291 and seventeen state grants totaling $7,419,302, reflecting significant outside investment in Hoquiam’s infrastructure, public services, and community priorities.
“This clean audit reflects the City’s commitment to responsible financial stewardship, accurate reporting, and accountability to the residents of Hoquiam,” said Mayor Ben Winkelman. “Our staff works hard to manage public funds carefully, including the federal and state grant dollars that support important projects and services throughout the community.”
The City’s 2025-2026 biennial budget totaled $146,269,272. As part of its financial reporting process, the City also implemented Governmental Accounting Standards Board Statement No. 101, Compensated Absences, as required by the Cash Basis Budgeting, Accounting and Reporting System (BARS) Manual.

On the evening of Tuesday, August 4, 2026, neighborhoods throughout Hoquiam will join forces across the country with over 16,000 communities for the “National Night Out” against crime. Hoquiam has been a proud participant for many years and we are asking for participants to host parties in their neighborhoods again this year. National Night Out provides an opportunity for our community members to get to know one another and build strong networks of communication about what is happening in the neighborhood.
All you need to do is host a block party, invite your neighbors, and get to know each other better! We recommend inviting everyone over for a potluck or BBQ. Most block parties are from 6:00 PM to around 9:00 PM and are a great way to get together and have fun!
Hoquiam public officials, police officers, firefighters and Crime Watch volunteers will drop in at each block party to visit and talk about important crime prevention and general safety tips.
National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in local anti-crime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back!
