WARNING ABOUT SCAM TARGETING PLANNING AND ZONING APPLICANTS

HOPKINTON: The Town of Hopkinton is alerting the public to a scam targeting applicants seeking planning and zoning approvals. Several applicants and their representatives throughout the state have reported receiving fraudulent emails and invoices that appear to come from the Town’s Planning Board.

These deceptive messages falsely use the Town logo, contain real information about active applications, and include itemized fees that appear legitimate. However, the fees and payment instructions are fraudulent. The Town will never ask applicants to wire money or make payments through unofficial channels.

The Town of Hopkinton urges all applicants to verify any suspicious communication by contacting the Planning Department at 401-377-7770 and Zoning Department at 401-377-7771 directly before making a payment.

If you believe you have received one of these scam messages or have made a payment as directed by a fraudulent invoice, please report immediately to your local police department where they live and the Attorney General's office. Attorney General’s office Phone: (401) 274-4400
