Benjamin Henry Latrobe was America's first formally trained architect (a British import), and there is an important Kentucky connection - Pope Villa in Lexington, KY.

On Tuesday the 5th of November at 7:00 pm the Carnegie Library will host the Christian County Historical Society for a lecture by Jim Coursey on Latrobe, his commercial and residential architecture - and its impact on a young America and Kentucky

Pictured is the restored facade of Pope Villa in Lexington, and an artist's rendering of a section of the interior.

Join us on the 7th of November for a look at this jewel in the crown of Kentucky architecture.

For the past two years the Carnegie Library has been home to the Hopkinsville Athenaeum Society. Pictured here is our October meeting. The Hopkinsville Athenaeum Society was founded in 1902 at the Hotel Latham, just a couple of blocks away from the Carnegie Library. Originally the Greek word Athenaeum referred to temples dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom - principally the one in Athens. In 1824 an Athenaeum Society was formed in London, seventy eight years before Athenaeum came to Hopkinsville. Each month two of our members give papers, and the other members critique them afterwards.

The HCCPL staff held their September meeting at the Carnegie Library. Mr. Jim Coursey provided a history of libraries and the impact and history of the Carnegie Library in Hopkinsville. The meeting was held in the renovated downstairs. The tour was of the unrenovated upstairs library. A few of the staff remember the library being in that location prior to 1977. Others were amazed at the very small space that held the collection prior to it being relocated to Bethel Street. One of the reasons for the staff meeting at the Carnegie to was discuss how far our library has grown and evolved in the past 42 years.
