The Hopkins Fire Department had a great meeting with State Representative Cheryl Youakim this week to talk about the evolving needs of the fire service and the communities we serve.

We discussed the big-picture challenges facing departments today—important legislation for public safety and the need to continue adapting to meet expectations.

We appreciate the opportunity to connect and the continued support for public safety.

Heads up, Hopkins: Parts of Downtown Hopkins will be closed tomorrow, March 19, for Minnetonka Fire Department Deputy Fire Marshal Shawn Johnson's funeral at the Hopkins Center for the Arts.

The closure will affect Mainstreet from 11th to 13th Avenues, along with 12th Avenue N and S, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The funeral is expected to be well-attended, so the Municipal Parking Ramp, nearby surface lots and side streets will likely be full, and there will be fire apparatus staged in front of the Art Center.

Our condolences go out to Deputy Fire Marshal Johnson's loved ones, the Minnetonka Fire Department and the City of Minnetonka.

❄️ Winter Isn’t Done Yet… ❄️

It looks like winter wants one more round. The National Weather Service is forecasting a substantial snowstorm this weekend, with snow expected to start Saturday night and continue into Sunday.

If possible, please avoid parking on the street beginning Saturday night. A snow emergency may be declared, and keeping streets clear helps plows do their job and ensures emergency vehicles can reach you quickly if needed.

A few quick reminders:
• Move vehicles off the street if you can
• Give plows plenty of room to work
• Check on neighbors who may need help shoveling

As always, Hopkins Fire Department crews will be ready to respond, but clear streets make a big difference when seconds matter.

Stay safe and keep an eye on the forecast!

Did you know every home should have a working carbon monoxide alarm?

To help keep our community safe, the Hopkins Fire Department is participating in a statewide initiative through the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division to provide free carbon monoxide alarms and free installation for Hopkins residents.

Carbon monoxide is odorless, invisible, and dangerous. A working alarm provides an early warning and can help protect the people in your home.

To request installation, complete the form here: https://www.hopkinsmn.com/FormCenter/Fire-32/Free-Carbon-Monoxide-Alarm-Request-310

Alarms are available while supplies last. This program is available for owner-occupied homes only and does not include rental properties or homes currently for sale.

Please share this information so friends, family, and neighbors in Hopkins know this free safety resource is available.

The members of the Hopkins Fire Department extend our deepest condolences to the firefighters and families of the Minnetonka Fire Department on the passing of Deputy Fire Marshal Shawn Johnson.

Deputy Fire Marshal Johnson was a dedicated member of the Minnesota fire service and a respected partner in mutual aid across our communities. His commitment to fire prevention, public safety, and service to others made a lasting impact on the departments and residents he served.

We are grateful for the work he did for the fire service and for the partnership he shared with neighboring departments, including ours. His presence and contributions will not be forgotten.

Please keep his family, friends, and the Minnetonka Fire Department in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Rest easy, brother.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Deputy Fire Marshal Shawn Johnson of the Minnetonka Fire Department, who died after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

Shawn served the Community of Minnetonka for 20 years. He joined the department in March 2006 as a Paid-on-Call Firefighter, demonstrating early on his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving his community. During his years as a Paid-On-Call member, Shawn also served as both a Lieutenant and Training Captain. In 2016, Shawn was hired full time as a Fire Inspector within the Department’s Fire and Life Safety Division, where his strong knowledge of the fire code and attention to detail became evident. His leadership and expertise led to his promotion to Deputy Fire Marshal in 2023, a role in which he served with distinction.

Shawn was passionate about training and developing firefighters across Minnesota. He taught and tested firefighters through the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board, traveling statewide to support departments of all sizes. His ability to educate, mentor, and inspire made him a respected resource throughout the fire service.

Service information will be shared once arrangements are finalized. Minnetonka Fire is working closely with Shawn’s family to support them in every way possible.

Deputy Fire Marshal Shawn Johnson’s integrity, commitment, and service to the Minnesota fire community will not be forgotten.
