The Commissioner of Revenue's office mailed this letter in April of 2022 in an attempt to notify citizens of the upcoming increase in the personal property bills for tax year 2022. Unfortunately, the increase in vehicle values is a statewide issue.

Many Hopewell citizens have asked why the value they are researching is currently so much lower than the assessed value on their 2022 tax bill. Please remember that the Commissioner of Revenue's office is obligated to follow the Code of Virginia. VA Code 58.1-3515 states that values must be assessed as of January 1 of the tax year, therefore, the value as of today is not the correct value for the tax year of 2022.

Our office is happy to answer any and all questions regarding the 2022 tax bills. You may reach our office by phone at (804) 541-2237 or by email at [email protected]. Please be patient we are experiencing an increased amount of calls and emails at this time and we do not have an answering machine. We are working hard and are doing our best to answer everyone in a timely manner.

Thank you

Hopewell Commissioner of the Revenue Office has received accredited status from the Commissioners of the Revenue Association of Virginia.

Commissioner Debra K Reason was recently honored at the 100th Annual Conference of the Commissioners of the Revenue Association by becoming one of the first localities in the Commonwealth to achieve office accreditation.

Accreditation is awarded only to the offices that have met the rigorous standards set forth by the Commissioners’ Association. The twelve standards set forth by the Association include education requirements for the Commissioner and staff, customer service, personnel and ethics policies as well as assessment methodology. Each office receiving accreditation has undergone an audit to ensure compliance and will be required annually to demonstrate they continue to meet these standards.

“Commissioner Reason has demonstrated a commitment to Hopewell and to good governance. This honor was earned through hard work and leadership. It signifies that the Hopewell Commissioner of the Revenue office has met the highest standards of professionalism as set forth by the Commissioners of the Revenue Association of Virginia,” stated The Honorable Thomas Blackwell, President of the Association.

Blackwell further added, “The Commissioners of the Revenue Association of Virginia has always been at the forefront in seeking to improve professional skills and overall performance for the good of the Commonwealth and its localities. In this, our centennial year, commissioners from around the state have worked to attain Office Accreditation in order to ensure greater accountability and increased uniformity with respect to office procedures for all our taxpayers.”

About the Commissioners of the Revenue Association

The Commissioners of the Revenue Association of Virginia was formed out of the desire of Commissioners to promote a common understanding of the problems faced in the assessment of taxes and the administration of revenue laws. The Association encourages cooperation with various departments in state government that have a direct relationship to the Commissioner’s office. Various committees within the Association work to promote the education of members and to study tax issues and make constructive recommendation for changes in tax law that will benefit taxpayers and localities.
