The National Preparedness Level increased to 3 (PL3) today, June 18, 2026, as significant wildland fire activity continues across multiple geographic areas and the potential for additional large fires remains elevated in the days ahead.

While current resource capability remains sufficient to sustain incident operations, geographic areas are increasingly utilizing national support to accomplish incident management objectives. The increase reflects growing demand for firefighting resources and heightened fire potential across several regions of the country.

From Idaho Department of Lands:

Fire danger has changed to “Moderate” effective immediately. Also, we are restricting IDL Burn Permits down to burn barrels and crop residue only, effective today. Folks that already have a current burn permit will be “grandfathered in” and will be able to continue burning their 5x5 piles until their permit expires.

The verdict is in!!!
We are the proud recipients of an Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Waterway Improvement Fund!!

We wanted to let you know that the Sam Owen Fire Department has been awarded a grant from the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Waterway Improvement Fund to refurbish and update our fireboat.

The support comments you provided last fall to our request on Facebook for community support was an important part of our application and instrumental in the scoring process of the Waterways Improvement Fund Grant award process. The department is grateful for the time you took to advocate on our behalf. This award will make a meaningful difference in our ability to protect life and property on the water, and we could not have achieved it without the community support you helped provide.

Although the grant money will not make the boat any prettier...it will provide funding to upgrade the most needed safety equipment. This, in turn, will greatly enhance our abilities during emergency responses.

🌡️ As temps rise, the fine, flashy fuels lining our roads—like dry grass and weeds—are ready to ignite. One spark from dragging chains, a hot exhaust pipe, or a tossed cigarette is all it takes to start a wildfire!!
🚗 Before you go:
✅ Check your chains—secure them tight.
✅ Maintain your vehicle— Properly inflate your tires &look worn parts or dragging metal of any kind.
✅ Make sure spark arrestors on OHVs are in good working order- carry water, a tool, fire extinguisher for any unexpected ignitions.
🚙Along the way:
✅ Avoid parking or driving over dry grass.
✅ Never toss cigarette butts out the window.

Be fire aware. Be responsible. Your prevention efforts protect Idaho’s lands and communities.

The heat is here. The fuels are noticing.

Across many parts of the country, grasses and other vegetation are drying out, temperatures are climbing, and fire danger is increasing.

With hot, dry conditions expected across much of the West, now is a good time to review your wildfire preparedness plans, know local fire restrictions, and recreate responsibly.

A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow.
