The Hood River Police Department was established in 1895. The department currently consists of 12 certified police officers.

The department currently consists of 12 certified police officers including Chief, 2 Sergeants, 1 Criminal Detective, and 7 patrol officers. The department also employs 2 Non-Sworn members including a Community Service Officer/Parking Enforcement Officer and an Administrative Assistant. The Department provides police services to the City of Hood River which is comprised of 3 square miles of reside

ntial, business, industrial and recreational properties. Hood River has a population of approximately 6500 full time residents. The City welcomes a large influx of tourists and outdoor recreational enthusiasts looking to experience the vast natural wonders, and recreational and sporting opportunities that the Columbia Gorge has to offer. Hood River is located about 60 miles east of Portland on the banks of the Columbia River. The city is nestled in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge, with its picturesque views of Mount Hood and Mount Adams, Hood River offers abundant access to outdoor activities that have outdoorsmen, athletes, and people who appreciate natural beauty, visiting us from all over the world.

🚔 HOLIDAY WEEKEND DUII ENFORCEMENT LEADS TO FELONS IN POSSESSION OF FI****MS & CO***NE

On September 6, 2026, a Hood River City Police Officer stopped a vehicle for a speeding violation within the city limits of Hood River.

During the investigation, the Officer observed several signs of impairment. After completing field sobriety tests, the 20-year-old driver was taken into custody for DUII.

A search incident to the arrest revealed two concealed fi****ms within reach of both the driver and the 19-year-old passenger, along with a baggie containing co***ne and other impairing substances.

The 20-year-old driver was lodged at NORCOR on charges of DUII, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Co***ne), and Unlawful Possession of a Fi***rm by a Felon.

The 19-year-old passenger was also lodged on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Fi***rm by a Felon and a Probation Violation.

These weren’t accidents. These were choices.

Choosing to drive while impaired puts everyone on the road at risk. Every time someone gets behind the wheel under the influence, they are gambling with their own life and the lives of innocent people who have done nothing wrong.

Add illegal possession of fi****ms by individuals prohibited from possessing them, along with co***ne and other impairing substances inside the vehicle, and those poor decisions become even more dangerous.

We say it repeatedly because it matters: DUII is preventable. There is no excuse for choosing to drive impaired. Make the responsible choice—find a sober driver, call a friend, use a taxi , or simply don’t drive.

The Hood River Police Department will continue to take impaired driving seriously. Rain or shine, day or night, holiday weekend or ordinary weekday, we will be proactive in DUII enforcement.

Reckless Driver Eluded Officers Twice Before Crashing

On August 21, 2026, a Hood River Officer observed a Dodge Charger traveling WB on I-84 near exit 64 at a high rate of speed. The Officer was on another call so he advised other units of his observations. A short time later, another Officer who was patrolling the downtown area observed a Charger run through a red light and accelerated at a high rate of speed. The Dodge Charger was being driven recklessly and fish-tailing through downtown Hood River at a peak time with patrons throughout the area.

The Officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop and accelerated onto I-84 heading eastbound at a high rate of speed. Despite the officer having his emergency lights and siren activated, the driver continued to flee. Within seconds, the vehicle was out of the officer’s sight.

The officer continued eastbound into Mosier to determine whether the vehicle had exited the freeway. While traveling eastbound on Highway 30, the officer spotted the same silver Dodge Charger traveling westbound and again attempted a traffic stop. The driver once again refused to stop and eluded the Officer This time heading back toward Hood River.

After an unsuccessful spike strip deployment on I-84, an Oregon State Trooper spotted the Charger in the city limits. The driver again accelerated away at a high rate of speed on Country Club Road. Due to the vehicle’s excessive speed, the trooper lost sight of it.

The trooper eventually located the Charger after it had crashed near the intersection of Country Club Road and Barrett Drive. At approximately the same time, an automated 911 crash notification from the suspect’s personal cell phone alerted Dispatch to the motor vehicle crash.

Hood River Police officers responded to the scene and the driver was located a short distance from the crash. The driver was taken into custody.

The driver was arrested on charges including Reckless Driving, Felony Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, DUII, and Misdemeanor Driving While Suspended.

This incident is another example of how quickly reckless and impaired driving can turn dangerous—not only for the driver, but for everyone sharing our roads.

No innocent motorists or pedestrians were seriously injured. The coordinated response by local and state law enforcement helped end the incident and remove a dangerous driver from the road.

On August 4, 2026, an Officer with the Hood River Police Department stopped a vehicle for Reckless Driving after observing it traveling at a high rate of speed, cutting off another vehicle, and narrowly avoiding a collision. The driver was also seen traveling in the opposing lane of traffic and disregarding a STOP sign.

During the investigation, a resident approached the Officer and volunteered as a witness after observing the driver speeding and nearly colliding with their vehicle while they were exiting their driveway.

As the investigation continued, the Officer observed several signs of impairment. After field sobriety tests were completed, the driver was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle revealed a concealed fi***rm, a glass methamphetamine pipe, approximately 14 grams of suspected methamphetamine, and an open alcoholic beverage.

The driver was lodged at NORCOR on charges of DUII, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine), Reckless Driving and Unlawful Possession of a Fi***rm.

Driving under the influence and driving recklessly are bad choices. Every time someone chooses to get behind the wheel while impaired, they gamble with the lives of everyone else on the road. In this case, those choices nearly resulted in a serious crash and could have easily ended in tragedy. Thankfully, no innocent motorists or pedestrians were injured.

Make the right choice. If you choose to use any kind of impairing substances do NOT drive. Plan ahead, call a sober friend, call a cab, or find another safe way home!

After 25 years of dedicated service to the City of Hood River, today we celebrate the retirement of Officer Erin Mason.

Throughout his career, Officer Mason has served our department and community with honor, integrity, and unwavering commitment. He has worn many hats during his tenure, including Field Training Officer, Use of Force Instructor, Ground Fighting Instructor and Detective, where he spent many years investigating cases and mentoring fellow officers.

Beyond his law enforcement duties, Officer Mason has always believed in the importance of community policing and building strong relationships with those he serves. His impact extends far beyond the badge, as he has been a familiar and respected figure throughout Hood River.

Many in our community also know Officer Mason from his years as a high school tennis and golf coach, where he invested countless hours mentoring and encouraging young athletes both on and off the court and course.

As this chapter comes to a close, we know retirement won’t keep Erin idle for long. We have a feeling you’ll find him spending plenty of time on the golf course, enjoying a well-earned retirement with family and friends.

Thank you, Officer Mason, for 25 years of outstanding service, leadership, and dedication to the Hood River community. Your contributions have left a lasting legacy within our department and throughout our community.

On July 15, an officer with the Hood River Police Department (HRPD) stopped a motorcycle after observing it blatantly run a stop sign and operate without registration plates.

After the motorcycle stopped, the driver, who was wearing identifying gear associated with a 1% motorcycle club, and the passenger immediately began discreetly (or so they thought) passing items back and forth.

The officer observed their actions, remained calm, and waited for backup to arrive before continuing the investigation. During the search, officers located a pair of brass knuckles, two loaded magazines concealed in specially made pockets, a plastic bundle containing a small amount of a white powdery substance, and two unidentified pills on the driver. Exactly where the primary officer had advised responding units to look, a loaded fi***rm was located on the passenger.

The driver is a convicted felon, and the passenger did not possess a concealed handgun license.

This encounter could have taken a very dangerous turn. Thanks to the officer’s professionalism, sound judgment, and reliance on his training, the situation ended safely. Both suspects were arrested and lodged at NORCOR on a variety of charges, including Felon in Possession of a Fi***rm, Felon in Possession of Am******on, Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Concealed Fi***rm, and Tampering with Physical Evidence.

Every traffic stop carries unknown risks. We’re grateful for the professionalism of our officers and their commitment to protecting our community every day. Their vigilance and training help keep Hood River a safe place to live, work, and visit.

In English |En español - This Monday, take a Tour of the Police Station at our Safety Bond Open House!

Modern police stations help officers do their jobs effectively by giving them the space and tools they need. The Hood River police currently work out of a modified fire engine bay in the basement of City Hall. This space lacks many of the features necessary for a police force. The city is exploring a construction bond to upgrade the police station.

Drop in anytime during our Open House and Tour on Monday, June 29th from 5-7 pm at City Hall, 211, 2nd Street in Hood River. The public is welcome to stop by to review materials, ask questions, give feedback, and tour the police facilities.

Today, our Officers along with Hood River FD have responded to 4 separate incidents where someone has tried starting a fire. The locations of the fires were on Jaymar, the frisbi golf park and two bathrooms at the Marina. If you see any suspicious activity, please call 541-386-2121 or 541-386-2711.
