This last weekend we had the pleasure of celebrating Undersheriff Brian Rockett and his retirement after 30 years of service to our community.

Beginning as a Reserve Deputy in 1995, Rockett was hired full time in 1997. While serving as a Patrol Deputy, Brian Rockett was an instructor in multiple disciplines, both within our office and at the DPSST academy.

In 2013, Brian Rockett was appointed Undersheriff by newly-elected Sheriff Matt English, and he served in that role until his recent retirement.

Over his 30 years of service, Undersheriff Rockett has served the Hood River community with professionalism and distinction. His leadership in our office has left a lasting legacy and will be missed, but we are overjoyed for him as he moves into retirement.

Undersheriff Brian Rockett, thank you for your service to our community.

On Friday we celebrated the retirement of Deputy Joel Carmody. Carmody began serving the Hood River community in 2004 as a Reserve Deputy before being hired as a full time Deputy in 2007.

During his time with our office, Carmody was an instructor in multiple disciplines, to include Defensive Tactics and Use of Force. Carmody was also a Field Training Officer, helping to train new deputies.

In recent years, Carmody took on the Marine Program of the Sheriff’s Office. As the full time Marine Deputy, Carmody quickly became well-known and respected, both in our local recreational community, and at the state level as an instructor for the Oregon State Marine Board’s Marine Law Enforcement Academy.

We are grateful for Deputy Carmody’s years of service to the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office and the Hood River community, and we wish him the best in retirement.

Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) Hood River & Wasco

Moving public safety "upstream," LEAD Columbia Gorge provides a non-punitive alternative to the criminal justice system through three distinct entry points: arrest diversion, social contact, and community referrals. This project explores how LEAD Navigator, Nick Smallmon utilize "lived experience" to build trust in marginalized communities, addressing the root causes of "livability" crimes. From securing housing for individuals unhoused for over two decades to providing "alumni status" for those reaching stability, the program demonstrates that consistent human connection is the most effective tool for reducing law enforcement contact and improving community health.

SCAM ALERT:

Our dispatch center has received multiple calls this morning of someone claiming to be Sgt. Joel Ives with the Sheriff’s Office placing calls that eventually lead to asking for fines to be paid over the phone. Ives is in fact a Sergeant with our office, but he has been stuck in meetings all morning and definitely did not call you.

As a reminder, the Sheriff’s Office will never ask you to pay a fee or fine over the phone. Anyone who calls you claiming to represent our office can be verified by you hanging up, calling our non-emergency dispatch number (541-386-2711), and asking to speak with that person. Our dispatchers will happily connect you with them, at which time you will be able to verify their legitimacy.
