Benzie County Road Commission BCRC maintains 180 miles of Primary Roads and 446 miles of Local & Seasonal roads, as well as 155 Lane miles of State Trunkline under contract with MDOT.

Happy Wednesday!

Here's what our crews are working on today:

Two graders are out maintaining seasonal roads.

Two skip loaders are addressing edge ruts and high ridges on gravel roads.

One mower is working along CR-669, heading toward CR-610 and into the Lake Ann area.

Another mower is working on River Road and will be mowing primary roads in that area.

Our pothole patcher is out making repairs on project roads.

Next door at the new facility site, one crew is stripping topsoil and bringing the area up to grade. The two red maple trees out front will remain, but the pine trees have been removed.

Looking ahead, Molon Excavating is scheduled to arrive in approximately two weeks to begin our 2026 paving projects.

As always, if you see flashing lights, equipment, workers, or a dust cloud ahead, please slow down and use caution. Our crews appreciate your patience and help in keeping everyone safe.

Good morning Benzie County!

In light of the tragic loss of three Road Commission employees (Not Benzie County) who were killed while working along the roadside this year, the Benzie County Road Commission has partnered with the Benzie County Sheriff's Office to increase safety efforts in our work and construction zones.

I am proud to announce that we have reached an agreement to work together in a combined effort to help ensure our employees return home safely each day. Everyone at the Road Commission has loved ones, friends, and family who expect us to come home safely at the end of every shift.

We believe this partnership will provide an added layer of safety and peace of mind for our crews as they maintain and improve our county road system. The Benzie County Sheriff's Office was eager to step in and support this initiative, and we are extremely grateful for their commitment to the safety of our employees.

We ask all motorists to please slow down, stay alert, and be mindful when traveling through work zones. A few extra seconds of caution can save a life.

Thank you for your support in helping keep our workers safe.

Good morning Benzie County!

We have a full slate of work planned today. Our small tree crew is out cleaning up downed trees and debris from the windstorm over the weekend.

Today also marks the start of county wide mowing operations, with crews beginning on Platte Road. Our park crew is continuing maintenance of the MDOT parks, while several crews are out working on gravel seasonal roads. We also have a skip loader out repairing edge ruts along paved roads.

Next door at the future facility site, a small crew is continuing to undercut and remove soft soils identified during geotechnical investigations and recompact the site. A dozer rental is also scheduled to arrive this afternoon to begin stripping topsoil.

Good news for travelers, Bixler Road is back open to through traffic. We will be removing the barricades in the near future.

Looking ahead, paving season is right around the corner. Molon is anticipated to begin our local paving projects within the next couple of weeks.

As always, please watch for crews and equipment working throughout the county and give them plenty of room to operate safely.

Good morning Benzie County!

Much of the same as yesterday. Graders are out working on seasonal roads, skip loaders are continuing edge rut repairs, and our ditching crew is cleaning and improving drainage in various locations throughout the county.

Molon paving will be here in a couple weeks to start our local paving package.

Our sign technician is out collecting traffic data with traffic counters, and the park crew is maintaining MDOT parks.

Over at the old school property, the excavator is undercutting some loose soils that were identified during our geotechnical boring work. Crews are also installing silt fence to contain sediment before stripping topsoil from the site.

Jasper pulled an all nighter chasing mice.

Board meeting today here in Honor at 9:30am.

Good morning Benzie County!

Much of the same as yesterday. Graders are out working on seasonal roads, skip loaders are continuing edge rut repairs, and our ditching crew is cleaning and improving drainage in various locations throughout the county.

Today we also have a ditching operation on River Road near M-22. Traffic control will be in place, so please slow down, watch for workers, and expect minor delays in the area.

County-wide mowing operations will begin soon, helping improve visibility and maintain the road right-of-way throughout Benzie County.

We also recently received word from Molon that our local paving projects are expected to begin within the next 2–3 weeks. We're looking forward to getting these improvements underway and providing smoother, safer roads throughout the county.

Good morning Benzie County!

Much of the same as yesterday. Graders are out working on seasonal roads, skip loaders are continuing edge rut repairs, and our ditching crew is cleaning and improving drainage in various locations throughout the county.

Our sign technician is out collecting traffic data with traffic counters, and pothole patching operations continue where needed.

County-wide mowing operations will begin soon, helping improve visibility and maintain the road right-of-way throughout Benzie County.

We also just received word from Molon that our local paving projects are expected to begin within the next 2–3 weeks. Roads being paved are listed below.

Fowler Road – Overlay from east of Valley Road through the guardrail section (1,223 tons)
Eden Hill Road – Wedge/overlay from Lincoln Road to Crystal Drive (2,155 tons)
Lincoln Road – 3" pave from US-31 to Eden Hill Road (620 tons)
Worden Road – Wedge/overlay from US-31 to Eden Hill Road (350 tons)
Bixler Road – Wedge/overlay from Platte Road to Platte Road (665 tons)
Ballard Road – Wedge/overlay from Demerly Road to Grace Road (2,352 tons)
Cinder Road – Wedge/overlay from Bendon Road to N. Betsie River Road (1,290 tons)

Total paving: 8,655 tons of asphalt.

We're looking forward to getting these improvements underway and providing smoother, safer roads throughout the county.

🚧 Project Update – US-31 Through Honor 🚧

Molon is ahead of schedule and has already set back up to pave the second lane.

If everything continues to go well, this project should be completed in a single day as opposed to two.

Thank you to everyone who has been patient and understanding throughout this project. To the others.... we apologize for the inconvenience but the burnouts, yelling and middle fingers aren't necessary.

Please continue to slow down and watch for workers and equipment in the work zone.

🚨 URGENT TRAFFIC ALERT – HONOR, MI 🚨
6/4/2026 -PLEASE SHARE-

Today, Molon Excavating will be working with MDOT and BCRC to mill and repave US-31 through Honor.

The project limits extend from in front of the Benzie County Road Commission facility (Ely Rd.) to just past Riverside Drive, as shown on the project map. We will be milling 12' lanes and repaving.

This operation has a lot of moving parts, including numerous businesses, driveways, and side roads that must remain accessible throughout construction. Traffic will be reduced to one lane with flaggers directing vehicles through the work zone.

Please avoid the area if possible and expect delays if traveling through Honor today.

Most importantly, please slow down and stay alert where workers are present. Every person in that work zone has family and friends expecting them to make it home safely at the end of the day.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to improve this section of roadway.

Good afternoon Benzie County!

Crews are back at it today across the county. Graders are continuing work on seasonal roads, while skip loaders are repairing edge ruts and addressing other minor maintenance issues. Our sign crew is out replacing and maintaining signs, and additional crews are handling drainage and roadside maintenance as needed.

Work continues on the Bixler Road project. While the culvert replacement is complete, the road will remain closed until the stream restoration work is finished and the site is stabilized.

A reminder that the US-31 mill and fill project through Honor is scheduled for tomorrow and Friday, weather permitting. Expect one-lane traffic with flaggers directing vehicles through the work zone. Please plan for delays and consider alternate routes if possible.

As always, please slow down, stay alert, and give road crews plenty of room to work safely.
