Today’s outlook is more encouraging, but we are not letting our guard down. Tropical Storm Moke is expected to pass well south of the islands, although Hawaiʻi Island could still receive significant rain through Monday.

Forecast totals remain uncertain and may be lower than the current estimate of 5 to 10 inches.

We have positioned personnel and resources statewide, with a particular focus on protecting communities in Kaʻū. Roads are being repaired quickly, power has been restored to about 90% of Hawaiʻi Island customers and approximately 6,600 customers remain without service. DHS is also helping arrange hotel accommodations for displaced residents who need temporary housing.

In Nāʻālehu, the recovery of iwi kūpuna and remains continues with care and respect, and additional measures are being taken to protect the cemetery.

Operation TREK808 is also underway, using C-17 aircraft to bring additional equipment to Hawaiʻi Island.

We have submitted our request for a federal emergency declaration, and I discussed Hawaiʻi’s needs directly with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. We are hopeful for prompt approval.

We are also monitoring Iselle, which is not currently projected to threaten Hawaiʻi.

Please remain alert, avoid flooded roads and continue following official updates.

We continue to closely monitor Tropical Storm Moke, which is expected to pass south of the islands. Heavy rain and gusty winds are expected to begin tonight, with the greatest flooding risk on Hawaiʻi Island. Please complete preparations today, secure loose outdoor items, avoid flooded roads and follow official updates.

As we prepare for Moke, recovery from Lala continues. Hawaiʻi Island residents affected by Lala can request assistance and find information about food, water, tarps, cleanup supplies, chainsaw support, SNAP replacement benefits and other resources at vibranthawaii.org/lala.

Tropical Depression Two-C has strengthened into Tropical Storm Moke. We are closely monitoring the storm, which is forecast to pass south of the islands Sunday and Monday. While Moke is smaller and farther south than Lala, it could still bring heavy rain, flash flooding and strong winds, particularly to Hawaiʻi Island and Maui.

I urge everyone, especially communities still recovering from Lala, to prepare now, follow official updates and avoid unnecessary travel as conditions worsen.

In the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Lala, we are preparing for the formation of another potential tropical cyclone. Officials urge residents to follow official news sources, review emergency plans and prepare before the situation potentially worsens over the weekend.

Recovery efforts for those affected by Lala are underway. The Hawai‘i Community Foundation, Vibrant Hawai‘i, UNIQLO USA and Tadashi Yanai (UNIQLO founder and Fast Retailing chairman) are contributing to the efforts through donations and the deployment of immediate needs to residents.

Residents affected by Tropical Cyclone Lala should complete Vibrant Hawai‘i’s intake form.

This week we have been working on recovery efforts after Tropical Cyclone Lala. There are still many without power and in need of assistance and support. We are committed to ensuring that everyone gets the support and help they need during this recovery period.

In addition, we are preparing for the possibility of another tropical cyclone nearing our state. It is currently a low pressure area, however, there is a high likelihood of it developing further within the next few days. We will remain vigilant in monitoring this development and stay prepared for any outcome.

Even in the days following Tropical Storm Lala, the work of building a stronger Hawaiʻi continues.

I joined Kauaʻi Mayor Derek Kawakami on the west side of Kauaʻi to share the latest storm and recovery updates and celebrate the grand opening of Pūʻolo housing in Port Allen.

Pūʻolo means greater stability, a stronger community and new opportunities for the families who will live here. Mahalo to Mayor Kawakami and everyone who helped make these homes possible.

Kaʻū has always held a special place in my heart. It was where I had the privilege of caring for patients as a physician, and where I came to know the strength, kindness and resilience of this community.

Yesterday, I joined Hawaiʻi County Mayor Kimo Alameda and Maj. Gen. Stephen Logan to assess the storm damage firsthand.

The road to recovery won’t be easy, but Kaʻū will not walk it alone. We will continue working alongside Hawaiʻi County and our partners to help families recover, restore what was lost and support this community every step of the way.

Due to the severe impacts of Hurricane Lala, all state and county offices, Hawaiʻi State Department of Education schools, public charter schools, courts and Judiciary offices statewide will be closed Monday, August 17.

Nāʻālehu Elementary School will remain closed through Thursday, Aug. 20, because of storm-related damage and road closures affecting safe access. Families will receive updates directly from their schools.
