Over the past few days, we’ve seen the strength of our Hawaiʻi community on full display.

Our hearts are with everyone affected by Hurricane Lala, especially the families, schools, businesses, and communities continuing to recover.

We’re grateful for the first responders, utility crews, educators, volunteers, neighbors, and countless others working tirelessly to help our islands recover.

At Junior Achievement of Hawaiʻi, we believe preparing young people for the future is about more than financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. It’s also about building resilience, problem-solving, and the confidence to navigate life’s unexpected challenges.

Board Spotlight: Paul Gauci

At Junior Achievement of Hawaiʻi, we’re proud to have board members who are passionate about preparing the next generation for success.

Today we’re spotlighting Paul Gauci, AVP & Senior Wealth Advisor at First Hawaiian Bank, and Vice Chair and Incoming Chair of the JA Hawaiʻi Board of Directors.

As a financial advisor, Paul understands how life-changing financial education can be. Looking back on his own experiences, he believes every young person deserves the opportunity to learn the skills needed to make informed financial decisions and create opportunities for themselves.

One message from Paul especially resonated with us:

“Through Junior Achievement of Hawaiʻi, we can give students the knowledge, confidence, and financial skills they need to make smart choices, create opportunities for themselves, and build a brighter future.”

Paul’s advice to his high school self:

“Be curious, ask questions, and never stop learning. Seek out people you admire, learn from their experiences, and don’t be afraid to ask for guidance. The right mentor can help you see possibilities you never imagined and avoid lessons that otherwise take years to learn. Invest in yourself early, stay open to new opportunities, and remember that small steps taken consistently can lead to extraordinary results over time.”

Part-Time District Program Manager
📍 Hilo, Hawaiʻi Island

Are you passionate about education, building community connections, and helping Hawaiʻi’s young people succeed?

Junior Achievement of Hawaiʻi is looking for a Part-Time District Program Manager to help grow and support our programs across Hawaiʻi Island.

In this role, you’ll work directly with educators, volunteers, and local businesses to bring hands-on learning experiences in financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship to students from kindergarten through high school.

What you’ll do:
✔ Recruit, train, and support classroom volunteers
✔ Build relationships with educators across Hawaiʻi Island
✔ Coordinate JA programs and help ensure a great experience for teachers and volunteers
✔ Organize volunteer trainings and strengthen community partnerships
✔ Support occasional evening and weekend events

We’re looking for someone who:
• Lives within commuting distance of Hilo
• Enjoys building relationships and working with people
• Is organized, dependable, and comfortable managing multiple projects
• Has a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (preferred)

💼 Part-time
💲 $25,000–$30,000 per year

Meet Our Board: Michelle Luxton

We’re excited to introduce Michelle Luxton, First Vice President and Executive Residential Loan Officer, Private Lending Group at American Savings Bank, and a valued member of the JA Hawaiʻi Board of Directors.

In her role, Michelle helps individuals and families navigate one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives. She also sees firsthand how many adults never had the opportunity to learn fundamental financial skills like budgeting, credit, saving, and investing.

That’s why she’s passionate about Junior Achievement.

One message from Michelle especially resonated with us:

“I believe preparing students with financial skills is one of the most important steps we can take to slow the brain drain in Hawaiʻi and keep future generations here.”

Her advice to her high school self is simple—and timeless:

“Ask questions about money the way you’d ask questions in the classroom. How to save, how to invest, how to earn it. Start early. There’s no such thing as a dumb question about your own future.”

Featured Program: JA Personal Finance®

Financial literacy isn’t just about dollars and cents—it’s about helping students make informed decisions for life.

JA Personal Finance® is a volunteer-led program that brings local finance professionals into high school classrooms for five 45-minute lessons, giving students practical skills in budgeting, saving, credit, investing, and more.

The program also includes optional student-led activities that allow educators to continue the learning beyond the classroom visits.

You’re not alone. One of the questions we hear most is:

“What does volunteering with JA actually look like?”

The good news? It’s probably easier than you think.

✔️ We match you with a classroom that fits your schedule.

✔️ We provide the lesson plans, materials, and training.

✔️ No teaching experience is required.

✔️ A typical elementary school program includes five 45-minute classroom visits, with lessons scheduled during the school day at a time that works for you.

Most importantly, you’ll help students build confidence, connect classroom learning to the real world, and see what’s possible for their future.
