Culture lives when it is practiced, shared, and carried forward. 🧡

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we reflect on the enduring contributions of Kānaka Maoli, whose ʻike, language, traditions and relationship with ʻāina continue to shape Hawaiʻi and guide future generations.

Through mele, hula, art, and opportunities for our keiki to engage with culture, we strengthen their connection to place, identity, and community. 🌺

May we continue to listen, learn, uplift Indigenous voices, and honor the people and traditions that shape the places we call home. In doing so, we embrace our shared kuleana to ensure these stories continue to thrive for generations to come.

Our Kakaʻako may be celebrating 17 years, but the history of this place reaches much further back. 🧡

At Keawe Retail at Our Kaka‘ako, Puʻunui is a traditional place name for the area, meaning “large hill” or “large pile.” The name lives on today at The Flats at Puʻunui, a pet-friendly apartment community featuring a four-story glass mural by Native Hawaiian artist Solomon Enos. 🎨

Just steps away, Kalokoʻeli Courtyard is named after a prominent fishpond that once existed on the ma kai portion of the Puʻunui block. 🐟🐠

Look a little closer and you’ll also find the Hōkūleʻa Mālama Honua Mural, created in collaboration with the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Hōkūleʻa Crew members, 808 Urban, and the community. Inspired by stories shared by Hōkūleʻa crew members, the mural honors the waʻa and her Mālama Honua worldwide journey while sharing a message of caring for our oceans, islands, and one another. 🌊

This Hawaiian History Month, we’re taking time to learn more about the places, names, art, and history that give deeper meaning to Kakaʻako. 💫

Kalo holds deep meaning in Hawaiian culture. 🌱

In Hawaiian moʻolelo, kalo is connected to Hāloa, the elder sibling of the Hawaiian people, reflecting the deep relationship between Kānaka Maoli, ʻohana, and ʻāina. For generations, cultivating and caring for kalo has provided nourishment while carrying forward ʻike, kuleana, and cultural traditions.

As Kakaʻako has evolved, connections to kalo and Hawaiian culture can still be found throughout Our Kakaʻako—in mea ʻai and mea inu, art, cultural learning, and opportunities for the next generation to engage with these traditions. 🧡

Kakaʻako’s story continued to evolve throughout the 1800s as homes, immigrant camps, small businesses, churches, schools, and industry became part of the neighborhood. 🏘️

As the community grew, a strong sense of ʻohana, along with a spirit of entrepreneurship and social activism, became part of Kakaʻako’s rich history. 🧡

As we continue to celebrate Hawaiian History Month, we recognize the generations and communities whose stories are woven into Kakaʻako. 📖
