Mahalo to the Waikīkī Business Improvement District, JTB Hawaiʻi, Mayor Blangiardi, and the City Department of Facility Maintenance for working together to install new enclosed trash receptacles throughout Waikīkī. These thoughtfully designed bins will help keep our streets, beaches, and ocean cleaner while creating a safer and more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike. Small improvements like these make a big difference in preserving the beauty and vibrancy of Waikīkī for generations to come. ♻️

We want your help to determine the goals and priorities for the department, as it maintains and improves 394 designated park & garden locations, hundreds of facilities, and a wide variety of programs for years to come!

An online survey is open from now until Monday, June 29, 2026 at 9 a.m. (HST), accessible by visiting: bit.ly/parkgoals

Physical copies of the surveys are additionally available at two locations: Kapolei Hale in Suite 308 and the Parks Permit Office at Sheridan Community Park.

The survey will help DPR develop performance measures to track progress, improve services, and better meet the needs of our diverse community. Through this survey, DPR is seeking input on key areas, including:
• Improving the quality, safety, and upkeep of parks and gardens
• Expanding equitable access to facilities, programs, and services
• Strengthening environmental sustainability and resilience efforts
• Delivering meaningful programs that reflect community interests and culture
• Ensuring DPR staff are well-equipped to serve the public effectively

The 17-question survey is open to everyone, including City staff, and should take just a few minutes to complete. A big mahalo for your help as we look towards the future of your City parks and gardens!

Last week, I joined the ʻĀina Haina Citizen Patrol during their walk along Wailupe Stream and saw firsthand the dedication they bring to keeping our community safe. Having their furry friends with us was a big plus!

I’m deeply grateful for the time and care these volunteers give to our neighborhood. Through their partnership, they help keep me informed about issues ranging from unsafe sidewalk conditions to derelict properties, ensuring concerns are addressed before they become larger problems. Their selfless service makes ʻĀina Haina a safer, stronger, and more welcoming place for everyone.

This week, I had a chance to talk story with members of USTA Hawaiʻi Pacific about resurfacing the Diamond Head Tennis Complex and improving courts island-wide. These courts are more than places to play — they’re community spaces that bring people together, promote healthy lifestyles, and serve residents of all ages. The last time these courts were resurfaced was in 2019.

Mahalo USTA Hawaiʻi for sharing your manaʻo and for your continued commitment to growing the sport and serving our community. By listening, working together, and leading with aloha, we can make lasting investments that strengthen neighborhoods and improve quality of life across Oʻahu. 🎾🤙

Do you want to grow as a leader and make a difference in our community? The Honolulu City Council is seeking passionate and dedicated young leaders to serve on the Honolulu Youth Commission. ✨

As our current District 4 representative and Youth Commission Chair, Asa Shimizu, prepares to head off to college, I want to mahalo him for his outstanding service and leadership. Asa made history as the first Honolulu Youth Commissioner to have a resolution unanimously passed by the Honolulu City Council, and he championed issues ranging from sustainability to expanding opportunities for youth sports. Mahalo, Asa, for leading with aloha and showing what young people can accomplish when they have a seat at the table.

The Honolulu Youth Commission gives residents ages 14 to 24 a voice in local government, providing opportunities to help shape policies, programs, and issues that affect young people across Oʻahu. Commissioners serve one- or two-year terms, depending on the appointing authority, and applicants under 18 will need parent or guardian permission.

The future of Honolulu depends on the next generation of leaders. If you’re ready to make a difference, I encourage you to apply today:

Update to closed comfort station at Kūhiō Beach Park near ʻŌhua Ave. in Waikīkī:

For the past couple of months the City has been in negotiation with the bathroom pump manufacturer and the contracted installer over the warranty for the maintenance conducted on this comfort station in February 2026. Our goal was to minimize having to pay extra for materials already purchased, saving taxpayer dollars. These issues have been resolved, the warranty is being honored, and we are now moving forward with additional maintenance to the facility. We now hope to have these bathrooms operational by summer 2026. However, we do want to temper public expectations as we have seen these bathroom facilities malfunction and be damaged several times in the past. If that occurs, we’ll pursue other options for this park facility which may include a longer Capital Improvement Project or temporary bathrooms.
