It's time for a housing reality check.

Hawaiʻi families are being priced out of the place we call home. Just 62% of households statewide are owner-occupied, one of the lowest rates in the country. For Native Hawaiian families, that number drops to 47%.

Our lāhui has been here since the beginning. The data says we're being priced out of staying. And when families are forced to leave, they don't just take themselves. They take the shelter and stability they were providing with them.

HCA offers HUD-approved housing counseling and homebuyer education to help Native Hawaiian families and local communities find a real path to homeownership.

This week, Hawaiian Community Assets and Hawaiʻi Community Lending came together to share how Ua Hale Aʻela is filling the housing gap for local families across Hawaiʻi.

The presentation highlighted HCAʻs work acquiring and rehabilitating scattered homes, HCLʻs role as a CDFI partner offering down payment loans and credit repair programs, and the client journey through HUD-certified housing counseling, all working together to help renters become homeowners without leaving Hawaiʻi.

Three years after the Lāhainā fires, Hawaiian Community Assets is creating a concrete pathway home for Maui fire survivors through its Ua Hale Aʻela rent-to-own program.

17 units will be made available specifically for fire survivors, with the first four homes in Wailuku secured and currently under renovation. The program, supported by a $6.34 million grant from Hawaiʻi Community Foundationʻs Maui Strong Fund and House Maui Initiative, represents a model for what community-led disaster recovery can look like in practice.

Hawaiian Community Assets was founded 25 years ago by two amazing women who waited over 15 years on the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands waitlist, only to be denied due to credit issue.

We wish their story was rare, but it's all too common. Finances, credit scores and a lack of resources often keep Hawaiʻi families away from homeownership. We work to change that story.
