Palama Settlement’s Summer Enrichment Program offers fun and educational activities for children who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade. Each week features a different theme, with recreational, cultural, and educational programming. The $700 fee includes supplies, daily lunch, and an afternoon snack, with optional extended hours available for an additional cost. Space is limited, so register today!

Celebrating culture, community, and connection at the Leland Blackfield Youth Activity Center yesterday for our Boys’ Day & Cinco de Mayo celebration!

In Hawaiʻi, our communities have long been shaped by the blending of traditions from across the Pacific and beyond. Boys’ Day, rooted in the Japanese holiday now known as Children’s Day, honors the strength, growth, and future of our keiki. Cinco de Mayo commemorates resilience, culture, and pride within Mexican history and heritage. Together, these celebrations reflect the diverse cultures that continue to shape the vibrant spirit of Hawaiʻi.

Our youth enjoyed an afternoon filled with cake, ice cream, laughter, and a hands-on tutorial on how to make the viral cinnamon twists everyone has been talking about. More than just treats and activities, the day was a reminder of how food, culture, and shared experiences bring people together.

Today we celebrate the Honorable George R. Ariyoshi. Before he made history as the nation’s first Asian American governor, he grew up in the Kalihi-Pālama neighborhood, swimming at the Palama Settlement pool and receiving dental care at the Strong-Carter Dental Clinic.

In his interview with Warren Nishimoto of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Center for Oral History, he reminisced about Palama Settlement: “[It’s] where I learned to swim. In the Pālama Settlement pool. We had somebody teaching us how to swim, how to breathe and so forth. But one day, my kids swam for [Takashi] ʻHaloʻ Hirose Town Swim Club. They were swimming, and one day I was swimming with them and Halo Hirose tell me oh, ʻYou’re swimming Kapālama style, yeah?ʻ”

Governor Ariyoshi never forgot his childhood roots, supporting Palama Settlement well into his nonagenarian years. Here is a clip from 2018, when he was honored at the Mālama Pālama gala, surrounded by his friends and family.
