Across Kauaʻi, we've witnessed neighbors caring for neighbors, sharing resources, preparing meals, and helping one another recover. We were honored to deliver requested supplies to the Hanalei Community Hub this week, where meal service, volunteer coordination, and resource distribution have become a reflection of the community's resilience and care for one another.
One home visit that stayed with us was with a single mother whose roof was torn away during the hurricane. As we paused with her for a moment of rest while neighbors repaired her home and cleared debris from her yard, she shared how frightening it had been to watch the storm unfold and experience the damage left behind. What began as a conversation about supplies became an opportunity to listen, pray, and share a moment of encouragement during an overwhelming week.
Like many of the conversations we've had across the island, listening revealed both practical and personal needs. In this case, we learned that the friends helping with cleanup had been sharing a single rake and shovel. We were grateful to provide additional tools for the cleanup effort, while also creating space for her to share her story.
Sometimes the deepest grief is tied to the memories, possessions, and pieces of life that cannot be recovered. In those moments, we may not have all the answers, but we can be present and remind people they are not walking through it alone.
