Why is it important to support local?

Every choice about where we eat, shop, stay, and spend has the potential to make an impact beyond a single transaction.

Choosing locally owned businesses, makers, growers, and experiences helps keep more of the benefits of tourism within Hawaiʻi—supporting local jobs, strengthening our communities, and creating opportunities for the people who call these islands home.

It also gives visitors an opportunity to experience Hawaiʻi through the people who know and care for this place, building more meaningful connections with the communities they encounter along the way.

Supporting local is one way we can all contribute to a more regenerative future for tourism—one where the benefits of travel extend beyond the visitor experience and help Hawaiʻi’s communities thrive.

Small choices can have a lasting impact.

The next time you eat, shop, or explore, consider choosing local.

Legacy is not only what we leave behind, but what we pass forward.

The Legacy Awards recognize individuals whose service, leadership and contributions have made a lasting impact on Hawaiʻi’s visitor industry and communities. Their work reflects years of dedication and the understanding that the ʻike, values and relationships cultivated today help shape the path for generations to come.

We extend our deepest mahalo to this year’s honorees for the paths they have created, the people they have inspired and their continued commitment to Hawaiʻi. May their example encourage all of us to consider the legacy we are building through the work we do each day.
