🌺🐠 Beneath Hawai’i’s sparkling waters lies a living treasure, vibrant coral reefs

🐢 Corals are the backbone of Hawai’i’s marine ecosystems, offering shelter, food, and breeding grounds for countless species while supporting the delicate balance of ocean life

⚠️ But our reefs are under threat. Rising ocean temperatures, pollution, runoff, and human activity are putting immense pressure on these fragile ecosystems, endangering the incredible biodiversity they sustain

🐋🐬 Happy World Whale and Dolphin Day! 🐬🐋

Hawaiʻi’s waters are home to some of the most incredible marine mammals on Earth — from the humpback whales (koholā) who migrate thousands of miles to breed and calve in our warm waters, to spinner dolphins (naiʻa) resting in our bays after a night of hunting, to the critically endangered Main Hawaiian Islands insular false killer whales, one of the rarest marine mammal populations on the planet.

These species aren’t just visitors — they’re part of the fabric of this place, woven into Hawaiian moʻolelo, culture, and the health of our entire ocean ecosystem. 🌊

But they’re facing real threats: vessel strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, ocean noise, habitat disturbance, and warming waters. Spinner dolphins in particular are stressed by too-close human interaction during their critical daytime rest.

Here’s how we can help 💙
🐋 Keep 100+ yards from whales, 50 yards from dolphins
🐬 Let spinner dolphins rest — observe from a boat or shore, not in the water with them
🎣 Support responsible, sustainable pono fishing practices
🌊 Reduce plastic and runoff that pollutes our reefs and open waters

Mahalo to everyone who stopped by the DLNR DAR Outreach table! We appreciate you taking the time to learn about our work and efforts to support and protect Hawaiʻi’s nearshore resources.
