POV: Your classroom is the Skyline!

In August, the Hawaii Project Management Training Program took learning on the move as we explored risk management, scheduling, budgeting, and the real-world coordination behind one of Hawaiʻi’s biggest transportation projects.

From construction challenges to future transit-oriented communities, students learned what it takes to connect people, places, and opportunities.

PART 2: Ala Moana Pedestrian Bridge Field Trip

OahuMPO’s Transportation Project Management Training students were excited to visit the Ala Moana Pedestrian Bridge and learn how federal funds can help build infrastructure to better connect our communities.

We spoke with one of this year’s cohort members, Justin Menina, a Physical Activity Coordinator at the Hawai‘i State Department of Health, who shared his experience and takeaways about the field trip.

Have you been on the Ala Moana Pedestrian Bridge?

OahuMPO’s Transportation Project Management Training Program took a field trip to the bridge to see how public-private partnership brings safer, more connected places to life!

The bridge provides an accessible route between residences and retail in Kakaʻako and beautiful outdoor areas like Ala Moana Beach Park and Kewalo Basin. Pedestrians now have an option to enjoy these spots without having to cross six busy lanes of traffic at street level.

From ADA ramps and railings to thoughtful lighting, every detail helps create a space that feels vibrant and practical. It’s clear that this is more than just a bridge!

If you haven’t checked this area out yet, it’s worth a visit!

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll hear from one of the students about their experience.

We love a good transit love story. Wanna share yours with us?

Not only did we sell out this event, but we had 100% attendance! It’s crazy when you plan for maybe 20% of people not showing up and review the guest list just to see everyone did! It was such a privilege to host Dr. Bruce Appleyard for our Imagine This Speaker Series event! We do our best to educate the community on transportation to build their capacity to ask elected officials for things that WORK. It’s one thing to say, I’m tired of people speeding, it’s another thing to say, I want quick build roundabouts, road diets, and flashing beacons. Knowledge is power, friends.
