Mahalo to Councilmember Esther Kiaʻāina, and Councilmember Matt Weyer and the Honolulu City Council for hosting today’s Land Conservation Workshop at Windward Community College’s Hale ʻĀkoakoa! 🌱

The workshop brought together government agencies, nonprofit organizations and community partners to share information about City, state and federal funding opportunities that can help nonprofits and community organizations acquire land for conservation and agricultural purposes.

Our DHLM Clean Water and Natural Lands (CWNL) team was grateful to be part of the conversation. Van Matsushige, CWNL Program Manager, participated in a panel alongside representatives from government agencies and nonprofit organizations, sharing more about the CWNL Fund and how the City works with community partners to protect important lands across Oʻahu.

To date, CWNL investments have helped conserve more than 1,459 acres, including agricultural and culturally significant lands, while creating new opportunities for managed public access. More than $38.5 million in public funding has been invested in acquiring conservation land.

Kahuku Golf Course is in the national spotlight! ⛳🌊

City & County of Honolulu Golf Division’s Jordan Abe and Joevan Joaquin help tell the story of this special City-owned public course on Oʻahu’s North Shore in the fourth episode of ESPN’s Original Series, Where It Lies.

The series explores public golf courses across the country and the communities and people that give them their character. The Kahuku episode also features Bree Fong from the City’s Clean Water and Natural Lands (CWNL) Program and Clara Orr from Hawai'i Marine Animal Response (HMAR), highlighting how the property is about much more than golf.

Acquired by the City in 2017 through the CWNL Fund, the 114-acre property preserves public access to outdoor recreation and open space while protecting important coastal habitat. It is home to one of Oʻahu’s largest ʻuaʻu kani (wedge-tailed shearwater) colonies, along with honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles), ʻīlioholoikauaua (Hawaiian monk seals) and other native species.

Over the coming months, we’re taking you across Oʻahu to highlight some of the special places protected through the City’s Clean Water and Natural Lands (CWNL) Fund — starting on the North Shore at Kahuku Golf Course. ⛳🌱

The 114-acre property offers much more than a round of golf. Acquired by the City in 2017, Kahuku Golf Course preserves public access to outdoor recreation and open space while protecting important coastal habitat. It is home to one of Oʻahu’s largest ʻuaʻu kani (wedge-tailed shearwater) colonies, with an estimated 500–700 birds at a given time, as well as honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles), ʻīlioholoikauaua (Hawaiian monk seals) and other native species.

That unique combination of public golf, community and conservation recently received some national attention. 📺

Kahuku Golf Course is featured in the fourth episode of ESPN’s four-part Original Series, Where It Lies, which explores public golf courses across the country and the people and communities that give them their character. The episode also features Bree Fong from the City’s CWNL program, who shares more about the property and the importance of protecting its natural resources.

Last Wednesday, DHLM Director Kevin Auger joined affordable housing leaders from across the country at the Novogradac 2026 Affordable Housing Conference in Honolulu, delivering keynote remarks on behalf of Mayor Rick Blangiardi.

During his remarks, Director Auger shared an update on the City’s housing efforts, including the work underway to expand affordable housing opportunities, make better use of City-owned land, and build stronger partnerships to help deliver more homes for Honolulu residents.

Mahalo to Novogradac for the opportunity to be part of the conversation and highlight the work happening here on Oʻahu. 🏠

🏠 Applications are now open for Kaleimaʻo Village, a new affordable rental community being developed on 3.7 acres of City-owned land in ʻEwa Beach.

Kaleimaʻo Village will provide 126 affordable rental homes, including one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Of those, 119 will be reserved for households earning at or below 60% of area median income (AMI), with seven reserved for households at or below 30% AMI.

The first 79 homes are expected to be completed in October, followed by another 48 units in November.

📅 Applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through September 30.
