The recent Kona Low storm was a powerful reminder of both the vulnerability and resilience of Hawaiʻi’s agricultural community.
In a recent discussion on The Conversation - Hawaii Public Radio, PGC's Executive Director, Matthew Johnson, shared how the storm impacted the organization’s newly opened agricultural park in Haleiwa. The ag park, which opened last December, was created to support beginning farmers, increase local food production, and strengthen Hawaiʻi’s food system.
Severe weather events like this highlight the real challenges farmers face—from flooding and crop damage to infrastructure impacts. But they also reinforce why investments in resilient agricultural infrastructure and farmer support programs are so important.
Even in the face of these challenges, PGC remains committed to supporting local farmers, rebuilding where needed, and continuing the work of strengthening Hawaiʻi’s local food economy.
