Did you know some HFD apparatus carry Hawaiian names that reflect the history, culture, and communities they serve?

Ladder 31, Nāpuʻumaiʻa, is named for the highest peak in the ahupuaʻa of Kapālama.

Nāpuʻumaiʻa represents foresight, protection, and enduring support.

The name also honors the resilient mountain-growing maiʻa once cultivated there and carries the deeper meaning of something cherished and held in high esteem.

Whether responding to emergencies, supporting recruitment efforts, or serving the community, Ladder 31 carries the spirit of Nāpuʻumaiʻa forward through service, kuleana, and aloha.

For 175 years, the Honolulu Fire Department has proudly served the people of Hawaiʻi.

This weekend, we had the honor of participating in the King Kamehameha Floral Parade as part of our 175th Anniversary commemoration. Surrounded by family, friends, community members, and fellow participants, we celebrated not only a milestone in our department’s history, but the enduring connections that have sustained us for generations.

As we honor the legacy of those who came before us, we remain committed to serving our community for generations to come.

Mahalo for allowing us to be part of this cherished tradition.

Mahalo to all who helped build our King Kamehameha Floral Parade float and decorated the vehicles in our procession. A special shout out to Chief Deb Eleneki, the Akiona family, Jenn Puaoi Anderson, April Gillia, the Naluai family, and the countless hands who continue to give back and contributed their time to turn a vision into reality.

And to everyone who came out to celebrate with us, mahalo!

From the first pieces assembled to the final shaka in Waikīkī, this effort was made possible by dedicated employees, volunteers and a community that showed up with incredible enthusiasm.

Mahalo for the aloha!

Tomorrow morning we roll out 🚒

The float is coming together, the crew is ready, and tomorrow we take our place in the King Kamehameha Floral Parade.

Keep an eye out for the Honolulu Fire Department—and for one of our own firefighters portraying King Kamehameha.

Bring the family, find a spot along the route, and come celebrate with us.

Drop a 🚒 if you’re coming tomorrow?

Many hands, one mission. Today, HFD joined our partner departments to help load thousands of pounds of donated food bound for the Hawaii Foodbank. Mahalo to everyone who helped make this city-wide effort a success and support local families in need.
