Joey Cadiz, a Unit 15 water safety officer, went viral on social media as a hero coming to the aid of his North Shore neighbors during the Kona low.

Causing some of the worst flooding in 20 years, the storm reached critical levels in the middle of the night, and Joey, like a true first-responder, mounted his surfboard and rescued neighbors stuck in their homes.

His own farm, which is homebase for his nonprofit Laulau Solutions, was impacted by massive flooding.

As a community leader, lifeguard, farmer and labor leader, Joey is a true example of Hawaii working best when we do.

Congratulations to Kaneohe Elementary School Principal and Unit 6 member Derek Minakami for being named Hawaii's 2026 National Distinguished Principal by the Hawaii Elementary and Middle School Administrators Association.

It's his second honor in as many weeks — Kaneohe Elementary was also just named a 2026 National Gold Star School.

Derek praised the efforts of his school for the honor. "This is all of us. It's not me. It's kakou."

He will represent Hawaii in Washington, D.C., this fall.

HGEA is proud to stand with state Rep. Della Au Belatti as she runs for Lieutenant Governor, because we know she’s on the side of working people.

During the pandemic, she protected our jobs from the threat of furlough and supported our raises, even when others didn't have the courage.

Unlike her opponent, Belatti can't be bought. She's refusing corporate PAC donations. Her opponent? Just look at all the postcards and TV ads — paid for by wealthy, mainland-connected developers — that are flooding our airwaves and mailboxes in support of him.
Wealthy interests already have people in the room looking out for them. Working people deserve to have an advocate at the table with their concerns in mind.

Vote Della Au Belatti for Lieutenant Governor!

Don’t forget to mail in your ballot. It must be received by 7 p.m. on Aug. 8.

This is what running on people power looks like. Della Au Belatti vowed to not take a single penny of corporate money in her run for lieutenant governor. And that’s not a disadvantage if the working people of Hawaii vote her in because they want someone who fights for them, not big money developers and wealthy special interests.

Next time you see us on the roadside, throw a shaka or honk your horn to support leadership that puts Hawaii’s working families first.

Three in 10 households in Hawaii with children experience food insecurity, and too many students go without meals because their families do not qualify for free or reduced-price lunch under the current guidelines. Educators will tell you: Hungry kids can’t learn.

But that didn’t stop state Sen. Donna Mercado Kim from railing against free school lunches. She clearly doesn't share our values of standing on the side of working people.

Christy MacPherson does. She’s spent her whole career fighting for the most vulnerable and people like you. Just look at how she was on the frontlines of fighting for the historic minimum wage increase.

It’s time for a change. Working families in our community deserve better.

Christy MacPherson respects working families and public servants like you. For the past 30 years, Christy has been fighting for the working people of Kalihi.

As a social worker, community organizer, and a mom, she advocated for the historic minimum wage increase and the rights of tenants, mothers struggling with substance abuse issues, teens and adults coping with mental illness, and families experiencing homelessness.

Join us in supporting proven leadership that puts Hawaii’s working families first. Vote for Christy MacPherson for State Senate District 14.

Della has a 20-year record of showing up for HGEA members. She has supported funding for temporary hazard pay, legislation to improve recruitment and retention, and as House Majority Leader she helped steer the State through the pandemic – protecting our jobs and supporting our pay raises even when others did not.

Join us in supporting proven leadership that puts Hawaii’s working families first. Vote for Della Belatti for Lieutenant Governor.

Don’t forget to mail in your ballot early. It must be received by 7 p.m. on August 8.
