DAGS’ response to T.S. Lala includes:

Our Office of Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) division is on 24-hour emergency staffing, monitoring major and critical IT infrastructure that serve state government services.

Buildings crews readied our base yards across five islands and ensured generators that power DAGS-managed facilities are fully fueled.

Public Works Division instructed the contractors on our building projects statewide to secure project sites, and ensured all state partners and contractors are on standby.

Monday morning, all crews will triaging at our managed facilities to remove debris; to repair wind and water damages to include the damaged Capitol construction barrier; and to remove any downed tree branches.

DAGS has a Toastmasters Chapter which meets twice a month for one hour, online. Public speaking is an important skill to hone. Even if you don’t think you’re going to have to give a speech on stage at a lectern in front of a big audience, it’s great for people who might have to lead a presentation for their team… or in our case, be called on to testify at the Legislature.

DAGS staff are invited to join our group. Contact your supervisor for permission and information on how to join.

If you aren’t a DAGS employee but you do want to improve your public speaking skills, please go to https://www.district49.org/ to locate an “open” club that you can join! There are clubs online-only, hybrid, and in-person.

The head of one of the state’s key construction agencies is set to retire at the end of this month. Gordon Wood is the administrator at the Department of Accounting and General Services Public Works Division. It is the fourth largest Capital Improvement Plan agency in state government, after the Departments of Education and Transportation and the University of Hawai’i.

Wood is stepping down after 14 years at DAGS, and says he’s proud to have worked on signature projects like the Capitol pools.

Wood says he chose to end his architectural career at the state because he wanted to make a difference in our community. DAGS is now hiring for a new Public Works Administrator.

DAGS has a new Cemetery Office, situated in its Central Services Division. The manager of that office is Dion Yasui, who came on board to tackle the big task of managing and better maintaining eight very old cemeteries. He shares more about his mission in this month’s We Are DAGS.

Every year, 18 days before the primary election, the Office of Elections, an attached agency within the Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS), sets up a ballot counting center at the State Capitol. There’s a room on the third floor where volunteers open and sort the ballots that arrive, including the tens of thousands of mail-in ballots that have started coming in ahead of election day. Chief Election Officer Scott Nago shares more about what the volunteers do.

Voting closes at 7:00 PM on Election Day, Saturday, August 8, 2026. To ensure your vote is counted, you must be in line at a voter service center by 7:00 PM, or your voted mail ballot must be received by the deadline (postmarks are not accepted). Konawaena High School on Hawaiʻi Island will be ready to reopen for the new school year on August 3 following extensive flood damage repairs caused by the Kona Low storms in March 2026. Classrooms and facilities on both campuses were inundated with several feet of flood water, mud and debris which ruined carpets, flooring, electrical wiring, furniture and equipment. Leaking water also impacted ceilings and walls, creating conditions for mold growth.

After the storm, Konawaena High diverted most of its student body to distance learning. DAGS West Hawai’i District Office led the repair project at Konawaena High. Acting Lt. Governor and DAGS Director Keith Regan said, “Our DAGS team in West Hawaiʻi has done an amazing job. When the Kona Low storms came through and caused significant damage to various school facilities, they really stepped up and did everything possible to try to get those schools up and running again so that our kids can get back in there when school starts. I just want to congratulate them for doing an amazing job and really going above and beyond the call of duty.”
