I joined my colleagues at the “Get to Know Your Community Neighbor” event at Kuhio Park Terrace in Kalihi, co-hosted by Parents And Children Together Hawaiʻi and a network of community partners.

Centered around the theme of Keeping People Together (KPT), this event showcases the true resilience and spirit of our Kalihi community.  Residents connected with trusted service providers, unions, and community leaders who were there to share resources, employment pathways, and enjoy family-friendly activities for all ages.

As Kalihi continues to grow and change, itʻs important to create spaces where neighbors can come together, build relationships, and support one another.

Strong communities are built when people know their own neighbors, know where to find help when they need it, and uplift one another.

It was great to see our City District 5 Community Policing Team keeping everyone cool with free shave ice on a hot summer day.

A special mahalo to all of the hands that helped bring this event together.

Last month, I had the privilege of joining my fellow council members in welcoming distinguished delegations from three Japan Sister Cities:
📍Yamaguchi City
📍Edogawa City
📍Shibuya City

We met in the Council Chamber with their respective city administrators, council members, and community leaders, creating valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and discuss the local issues that impact our communities and economies.

While our cities may be separated by the Pacific, we share many of the same priorities. From preserving culture and tradition, to supporting economic growth, to creating vibrant and livable communities for future generations.

Sister city relationships are more than cultural exchange. They are built on mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to strengthening our communities through partnership and understanding.

Mahalo to our friends from Yamaguchi City, Edogawa City, and Shibuya City for visiting Honolulu.

Oʻahu’s first-ever Food Systems Plan is now available for public review, and your manaʻo is needed!

Developed by the City and County of Honolulu’s Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency, this draft five-year plan outlines more than 70 actions to strengthen Oʻahu’s food system, from supporting local agriculture and food security to improving sustainability and long-term resilience.

With approximately 25% of residents experiencing food insecurity and 85–90% of Hawaiʻi’s food being imported, building a stronger local food system is more important than ever. The plan is guided by the values of Pono, Mālama ʻĀina, ʻĀina Aloha Economics, Ea, and Ola Loa.

Community feedback will help shape the final plan before it is presented to the Honolulu City Council for adoption.

Review the draft, submit comments, and view webinar recordings by June 30 at the link below.👇

One of my favorite things about serving our community is finding opportunities to bring people together, and our Read Aloud event at Hālawa Skyline Station was exactly that. 📚🚆 Mahalo to for partnering with us again for a morning filled with stories, learning, and community connection.

This time, we were joined by DTS Director of Transit Jon Nouchi and firefighters from 🚒🧑🏽‍🚒 Fire Station 10 in ʻAiea, who helped make the day extra special for our youth.

The keiki got to meet real firefighters, explore a firetruck, hear stories read aloud, and even receive free .transit HOLO cards to take a ride on Skyline. 🚆📘 Director Nouchi also read a transportation-themed book that inspired him as a child, showing us how stories can shape our interests and help us dream big!

Events like this remind me why it’s so important to activate our public spaces and create opportunities for our City departments to connect directly with the community. When our keiki can meet the people who serve them, ask questions, and see themselves in those roles one day, that’s powerful. 💭🚀

A special mahalo to Firefighter Mau and Firefighter Otsuka, who spent their very last day of service with us before retirement. What an incredible way to cap off your careers and we mahalo you both for your years of commitment, sacrifice, and aloha. ❤️🙌🏼
