From our collection: a 49-star American flag!

This version of the U.S. flag was official for only one year before another state joined the Union and a new star was added.

Do you know what year the 49-star flag flew before it became the 50-star flag?

✏️ Artifact of the Day ✏️

Before social media ads, sponsored posts, and targeted marketing, businesses had a simpler strategy: put your name on a pencil and hope people didn't lose it!

These advertising pencils from Honesdale National Bank and Evans Garage, Hawley are part of our collection and remind us that local businesses were finding creative ways to stay in customers' minds long before the internet.

Which do you think lasts longer—a Facebook ad or a pencil in a kitchen drawer? 🤔

🐄 Artifact of the Day 🐄

This hand-carved wooden cow toy, dating to around 1880, was used by the Weidner family beneath their Christmas tree during the holiday season.

Now part of the Wayne County Historical Society collection, this simple toy reminds us of a time when handmade treasures brought endless joy, without screens or batteries.

Do you have a favorite toy or holiday decoration that has been passed down through your family? 🎄✨

🔔 A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who joined us for the Justice Bell program at Canal Park at Lock 31 on Saturday!

The weather couldn’t have been better, and our presenter, Amanda Owen, kept us engaged from start to finish with fascinating stories and facts that left many of us thinking, “How did we not know this already?”

It was an all-around wonderful afternoon of learning and discovery as we explored the history behind the 19th Amendment and the remarkable women whose determination made it a reality. The Justice Bell may no longer ring for the cause, but it certainly gave us plenty to talk about!
