Today marks the end of an era as the old mill building at the Chiqola Mill site comes down. For generations, these walls stood as a symbol of hard work, community, and the rich textile history that helped shape our region.

While it’s difficult to see such a historic landmark disappear, we honor the memories, the people, and the legacy built here over the years. History may be changing today, but it will never be forgotten.

During the May council meeting, the Mayor and Town Council recognized The Honorable Dennis C. Bannister, Jr. for 12 years of dedicated service as Municipal Court Judge.

Judge Bannister was honored for his unwavering commitment, fairness, professionalism, and service to the community throughout his years of service to the Town of Honea Path.

We thank Judge Bannister for his dedication and wish him the very best in his retirement.

🚰 Fire hydrant flushing begins today, Monday, May 11. Crews will be working throughout the area over the coming days to flush hydrants as part of routine system maintenance.

Residents may notice temporary drops in water pressure or slight discoloration of water during flushing activities. If discoloration occurs, simply run cold water for a few minutes until it clears.

🚧 Chiquola Mill Week 1 Update
📅 May 4 – May 8, 2026

While the rain was much needed, it unfortunately began shortly after work started on site. Ben provided the following construction update yesterday:

* Vegetation clearing around the pond is approximately 90% complete.

* Erosion control installation remains in progress and is on schedule to be completed adjacent to the pond by Monday.

* One row of silt fence has been installed along the lower portion of the site, with portions of the second row also completed.

* Erosion control (silt fence) along lower portion of site under construction and mostly complete.

* Vegetation removal was started along lower portion of the site with 90% cleared around pond.

* Excavation of one sediment trap began this week. During excavation, crews encountered brick and concrete debris. The affected soil and material are being stockpiled for proper disposal at a later date.

* Pond backfill is expected to be completed on or around May 15.

* Removal of asbestos-containing building debris near the parking lot is scheduled to begin Monday around noon.

* Additional asbestos debris near the upper area of the pond is also scheduled for removal next week.

* Approximately 3,200 tons of asbestos debris are expected to be removed next week.

🚨 NOTICE TO HONEA PATH RESIDENTS 🚨

The Honea Path Fire Department, Utility Department will be conducting annual fire hydrant flushing throughout town beginning May 11th through May 25th, 2026.

Residents may experience temporary water discoloration or a brief drop in water pressure during this time. If discoloration occurs, please allow your water to run for a few minutes until it clears.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as crews work to maintain the safety and reliability of our water system and fire protection services.
