📢Public Notice in regard to Questions about New World Screwworm📢

What you need to know to protect your animals in Texas. New cases should be reported to TPWD or TAHC immediately. Here are some reference photos for identifying appearances and differences between the different maggots. A veterinarian or your local game warden can assist you. Being informed can help to limit spread.
If you suspect screwworm infestation:
Contact Authorities:
Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) for livestock and pets: 800-550-8242
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) for wildlife: 512-389-4505
Notify your private veterinarian.
Do not delay reporting. Early detection limits spread and minimizes long-term consequences.
Dogs and cats. Pets are at risk too — and one of the cases confirmed in the current outbreak was a dog. Any break in the skin can attract the fly: bite wounds, scratches, ear infections, hot spots or a fresh spay or neuter incision. Newborn puppies and kittens face the same navel risk as other young animals. Owners should keep wounds clean and covered and watch for sores that worsen, drain or smell foul, along with pets that lick or bite at one spot obsessively.

As of today, 6/9/26, these are the few confirmed cases in Texas.
-2 confirmed cases in Zavala County in 2 Calves.
-1 confirmed case in a calf in La Salle County.
-1 Confirmed case in a dog in Andrews County
- 1 Confirmed cast in a goat in Gillespie County.

“If you or your animals have any wounds—new or old—it is critical to keep them clean, treated, and covered to prevent fly access.”-Centers for Disease Control
