Firefighter Lawrence Matthews, 36
Dolton Fire Department. Dolton, IL
Firefighter Matthews died shortly after arriving at the scene of a fire. He appeared to have shortness of breath and began leaning on a fence for support. He collapsed shortly after and was pronounced dead at Ingalls Hospital a short time later from a cardiac arrest. Before getting called out to the fire, Firefighter Matthews was on duty, helping to administer exams to 250 applicants to the Dolton Fire Department. Ten years earlier he had received a life-saving heart transplant.

We’re proud to share that Oak Forest paramedics Ryan Ballard and Dana Pycz were recently recognized at Advocate Christ Medical Center’s Trauma Survivor’s Day for their outstanding response to a multi-casualty incident on I-57. Their quick thinking and expert care were instrumental in the patient’s recovery. Despite the severity of the situation, Ryan and Dana remained calm and focused, working closely with the trauma team to ensure the best possible outcome.
