Today, Homewood Fire Department had the opportunity to visit the Shades Valley YMCA Summer Day Camp and spend some time with an amazing group of campers.

We talked about fire safety, showed off some of our equipment, answered lots of great questions, and hopefully inspired a few future firefighters along the way.

Building relationships with the next generation is one of the best parts of our job. Thank you to the campers and staff for making us feel so welcome. We had a great time and look forward to seeing everyone again soon!

This week, members of Homewood Fire attended the North American Water Rescue Conference in South Bend IN, which consisted of one day of lecture followed by three days of intensive hands-on training. The courses were taught by some of the leading water rescue experts from around the world, providing participants with valuable knowledge and practical skills for responding to severe weather events that can result in significant or catastrophic flooding.
Flooding remains one of the most common and deadly natural disasters worldwide. Through training opportunities like this, HFD members continue to enhance their capabilities and preparedness, ensuring they are ready to serve and protect our community when these emergencies occur.

The Homewood Fire Department was honored to be represented in Montgomery as Governor Kay Ivey signed an important update to Alabama’s arson statute. Chief Broadhead and Deputy Chief Hall attended the bill signing in support of this commonsense public safety legislation.

Under the new law, setting a fire or explosion inside a business while committing a theft is now classified as Arson in the First Degree. This change closes a gap in state law and ensures that individuals who endanger lives and property through these acts are held fully accountable.

This legislation is important to Alabama’s business community and helps provide greater protection for the employees, customers, and first responders who can be placed in harm’s way when fire is used as part of a criminal act.

Thank you to everyone who played a role in advancing and supporting this legislation. Efforts like these strengthen public safety, protect our businesses, and help make communities across Alabama safer.
