Barrett Elementary serves students in grades K-4 in the Steel Valley School District. The goal of the Steel Valley School District is to provide the best in educational opportunities to its students. Each year the Steel Valley Board of School Directors and the Central Administrative Staff review the educational programs and responsibly respond to fiscal demands. Maintaining cost-effective quality

educational programs is one of the School District’s major concerns. Pupils are challenged with opportunities to expand their talents to the utmost. National test results reflect current levels of achievement of Steel Valley Students and identify those in need of remediation. Students annually receive an array of awards, scholarships and other competitive honors. The staff participates in activities designed to keep them informed and updated regularly in all aspects of education. Administrators, teachers and support personnel are carefully chosen. The School District seeks only the most capable professional personnel to ensure an outstanding school program.

As we close out the school year and bid farewell to Barrett, we wanted to share some photos of classrooms and other spaces. These photos were taken in the last couple of days of school, so some of the rooms are empty while the students were out on field trips or enjoying time in other parts of the building.

Barrett has changed over the years. Some spaces are newer, and some classrooms have been serving as models for new furniture for Steel Valley Elementary. Still, perhaps some of these photos will generate some memories for our alumni.

As our students wrap up their final day at Barrett Elementary, we want to share our deepest gratitude for every person who helped make Barrett a remarkable place that served generation after generation of students.

While this moment may be bittersweet, the future is exciting. We cannot wait to have our students experience everything that Steel Valley Elementary has to offer.

Have a great summer!

Earlier this year, Barrett students, families, alumni, and staff had an opportunity to reflect on the impact the school has had on their lives. They shared some memories, spoke about the care and compassion the staff has for the students, and expressed their excitement for the opportunities that will be available at Steel Valley Elementary.

Take a few moments to hear what they had to say!

Barrett's use of an inclusive model for Math and English Language Arts means that instead of pulling out special education students for individualized or small-group instruction, the special education staff joins the classroom teacher for individualized instruction, small group instruction, and full class instruction.

The early results are promising.

“It's important that this isn't just putting special ed kids in a classroom,” Barrett Principal Kim Winters said. “It's really, truly about trying to provide what we can for each student in a classroom where everybody feels welcomed and supported.”

“Every kid has different needs, and as a group, we’re coming together, figuring that out, and we’re making things happen in this room,” Ms. Amy Selick said. “We’re seeing emotional growth, academic growth, behavioral growth. Is every day perfect? No, but from where they were at the start of the year to where they are now, it’s a big change.”
